IEC 60974-5:2013 specifies safety and performance requirements for industrial and professional equipment used in arc welding and allied processes to feed filler wire. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2007 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - changes induced by the publication of IEC 60974-1:2012; - addition of a new symbol for hot surface (as specified in Clause 9); - determination of the maximum load in accordance with 10.7. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60974-1:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60974-5:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that sets forth safety and performance requirements for wire feeders used in arc welding equipment. This third edition updates and supersedes the 2007 edition, aligning with technical changes introduced in IEC 60974-1:2012. The standard applies to industrial and professional arc welding and allied processes, ensuring reliable and safe wire feeding to the weld pool.
Key updates in this edition include:
- Revisions based on IEC 60974-1:2012
- Addition of a new symbol indicating hot surfaces
- Defined methods for determining maximum electrical load
IEC 60974-5 is designed for wire feeders either as stand-alone units or integrated within welding power sources, applicable for both manual and mechanized welding torches. It excludes spool-on torches (covered by IEC 60974-7) and wire feeders intended primarily for laymen (covered by IEC 60974-6).
Key Topics
The standard covers essential aspects to guarantee wire feeder safety, performance, and durability:
- Scope and definitions: Clarifies the equipment covered, processes involved, and relevant terminology consistent with IEC vocabularies.
- Safety requirements: Insulation, protection against electric shock (normal and fault conditions), voltage supply standards, and overcurrent protection crucial for operator safety.
- Mechanical provisions: Design parameters relating to wire feeder enclosure strength, handling, drop and tilt resistance, and protection against mechanical hazards.
- Thermal considerations: Identifies thermal hazards including hot surface marking to prevent burns.
- Wire feeding performance: Specifies methods to determine maximum load and variation in wire-feed speed ensuring consistent filler wire supply.
- Testing protocols: Defined test conditions, instruments, and conformity checks including type and routine testing to validate compliance.
- Markings and instructions: Requirements for user manuals, safety markings, rating plates, and wire-feed speed indicators to support safe operation and maintenance.
Applications
IEC 60974-5:2013 wire feeders are critical components in:
- Industrial arc welding setups where high reliability and safety are paramount.
- Professional welding environments requiring precise and controlled filler wire delivery.
- Automated and mechanized welding operations involving advanced torch control.
- Allied arc welding processes such as electric arc cutting and arc spraying.
- Integration with welding power sources or standalone apparatus that demand compatibility and safety consistency.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers ensure that wire feeders meet international benchmarks for durability, safety, and operational performance-reducing downtime, improving weld quality, and protecting users.
Related Standards
IEC 60974-5 should be used in conjunction with several other IEC standards within the Arc Welding Equipment series:
- IEC 60974-1:2012 – Welding power sources: Provides overarching electrical and safety requirements that complement wire feeder standards.
- IEC 60974-7 – Torches: Covers safety and performance of spool-on torches, not addressed by IEC 60974-5.
- IEC 60974-6 – Designed for wire feeders intended for use by non-professionals or laymen.
- IEC 60529 – Degrees of protection by enclosures (IP Code): Ensures environmental protection levels for wire feeders.
- IEC 60050-195 – Electrotechnical vocabulary related to earthing and electric shock protection.
Adhering to IEC 60974-5 along with these referenced standards ensures comprehensive compliance with arc welding equipment safety and operational efficiency across international markets.
