IEC 60974-7:2019 specifies safety and construction requirements for torches used for arc welding and allied processes. This document is applicable to manual, mechanically guided, air-cooled, liquid-cooled, motorized, spool-on and fume extraction torches. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2013 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) definitions 3.11 and 3.20 were revised; b) requirements for arc striking and stabilizing voltage rating have been added to the sequence of type tests (see 6.2); c) the AC test voltage requirement for torches that utilize arc striking and stabilizing voltageshas been revised (see 7.5.2); d) the test configuration of isolated circuits for torches that utilize arc striking and stabilizing voltages has been revised (see 7.5.2); e) the metal tube used for the heating tests has additional allowable means of cooling methods (see 8.3.2 and 8.3.5); f) for fume extraction torches, the instructions for use include additional information (see Clause 13, item i)). This document is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60974-1:2017.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60974-7:2019 is an international standard specifying safety and construction requirements for torches used in arc welding and allied processes. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this fourth edition updates and replaces the 2013 edition with enhanced technical provisions. It covers a wide range of torch types including:
- Manual and mechanically guided torches
- Air-cooled and liquid-cooled torches
- Motorized and spool-on torches
- Fume extraction torches
This standard is essential for manufacturers, testers, and users aiming to ensure electrical safety, thermal performance, and mechanical reliability of welding torches. It should be used alongside IEC 60974-1:2017 for comprehensive arc welding equipment compliance.
Key Topics
1. Safety Requirements
IEC 60974-7:2019 details strict protection against electric shock, including:
- Rated voltages and insulation resistance parameters
- Dielectric strength specifications to withstand test voltages
- Enhanced safety provisions for torches utilizing arc striking and stabilizing voltages
2. Construction and Classification
The standard classifies torches by:
- Welding processes, such as MIG/MAG, TIG, plasma arc welding, and plasma cutting
- Cooling methods: air-cooled vs. liquid-cooled
- Operational type including motorized and fume extraction configurations
3. Thermal and Mechanical Performance
- Temperature rise limits with specified heating tests based on torch type
- Resistance to hot objects to ensure durability in harsh welding environments
- Impact resistance requirements for handles and accessible parts
- Specifications for materials used in torch handles to withstand welding conditions
4. Testing and Verification
Type and routine tests are standardized including:
- Arc striking and stabilizing voltage tests added in this edition
- Revised AC test voltage and standalone circuit test configurations
- Thermal heating tests with additional acceptable cooling methods, enhancing test flexibility
5. Instructions for Use
For fume extraction torches in particular, the standard now requires more detailed user instructions to ensure safe and effective operation, reflecting evolving workplace health standards.
Applications
IEC 60974-7:2019 is vital for ensuring that welding torches meet international safety and performance benchmarks across diverse industries such as:
- Automotive manufacturing
- Shipbuilding and offshore construction
- Metal fabrication and heavy machinery production
- Aerospace assembly and repair
- Pipeline and infrastructure welding
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can optimize torch design for operational efficiency and reliability while minimizing electrical hazards and overheating risks. Users gain confidence in equipment safety and can maintain compliance with occupational health regulations.
