This International Standard applies to twist-on connecting devices for connecting two or more unprepared rigid and/or flexible copper conductors having a cross-sectional area of 0,5 mm2 up to and including 16 mm2 and complying with IEC 60228, the total cross-sectional area of the connected conductors not exceeding 35 mm2. It covers low voltage circuits up to 1 000 V a.c. and 1 500 V d.c. where electrical energy is utilized for household and similar purposes.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60998-2-4:2004 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for twist-on connecting devices used in low-voltage electrical circuits intended for household and similar applications. This standard applies to devices used for connecting two or more unprepared rigid and/or flexible copper conductors ranging from 0.5 mm² up to 16 mm² in cross-sectional area, with a total conductor cross-section not exceeding 35 mm². The devices covered are suitable for circuits operating at voltages up to 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC.
Twist-on connecting devices (TOCDs) are widely employed in electrical installations due to their ease of use and reliable electrical and mechanical connection properties. This comprehensive standard establishes the technical criteria, test methods, and safety protocols to ensure performance, durability, and electrical safety in household and similar low-voltage environments.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
Defines the use of twist-on connecting devices specifically for unprepared copper conductors in household low-voltage applications up to 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC. -
Test and Performance Requirements
Details testing protocols including aging resistance, mechanical strength, temperature rise, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and protection against electric shock. -
Construction and Design
Sets requirements for materials, construction methods, and mechanical features ensuring the devices provide secure and sustained electrical connections under typical household conditions. -
Electrical Safety
Emphasizes protection against electric shock, clearances, creepage distances, and resistance to abnormal heat, fire, and tracking to ensure user safety and device longevity. -
Marking and Classification
Specifies guidelines for device classification and proper marking to assist in identification and ensure compliance with standards. -
Environmental Resistance
Includes requirements for resistance to humidity, ingress of solids and water, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), crucial for maintaining reliable operation in home environments.
Applications
IEC 60998-2-4:2004 twist-on connecting devices are extensively used in various low-voltage electrical installations including:
- Residential wiring for lighting, power outlets, and small appliance connections
- Electrical appliances requiring secure and flexible wire connections
- Maintenance and repair of domestic electrical circuits
- Household and similar environments where low-voltage electrical safety and reliability are critical
These connecting devices help electricians and installers ensure consistent, safe, and durable electrical connections in typical household wiring systems, enhancing both safety and performance.
