Describes performance requirements, test methods and classification procedures for degrees of protection provided by empty enclosures against electromagnetic disturbances for frequencies between 10 kHz and 40 GHz. The shielding protection is measured for the purpose of demonstrating that the enclosure provides adequate shielding of electromagnetic energy to support acceptable performance of the complete assembled units when tested to applicable IEC standards. The purpose of this standard is to provide a repeatable means for evaluating the electromagnetic shielding performance of empty mechanical enclosures, including cabinets and subracks, and to specify a marking code to allow a manufacturer to select an enclosure with a known capability for attenuating electromagnetic fields. The requirements for immunity to various types of electromagnetic disturbances, including lightning and high-altitude electro-magnetic pulse (HEMP) will need to be considered by manufacturers when determining the need for application of this standard for specific equipment and applications, and for the specific enclosure shielding requirements which are necessary as a function of frequency.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61000-5-7:2001 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Specifically, it provides installation and mitigation guidelines for the degrees of protection offered by empty enclosures against electromagnetic disturbances. This standard covers frequencies ranging from 10 kHz to 40 GHz and addresses performance requirements, test methods, and classification procedures.
The goal of IEC 61000-5-7 is to enable manufacturers and engineers to assess and classify the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of mechanical enclosures such as cabinets and subracks. By ensuring that enclosures provide adequate electromagnetic protection, the completed units inside these enclosures can maintain acceptable EMC performance under applicable IEC standards.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Objectives: The standard targets empty mechanical enclosures and aims to establish a repeatable evaluation methodology for their EMC shielding performance, allowing manufacturers to select enclosures based on known electromagnetic attenuation capabilities.
-
Shielding Performance Designations: IEC 61000-5-7 introduces a marking code (EM code) to designate the levels of EMC protection provided by enclosures. This code helps in identifying enclosures’ shielding effectiveness against electromagnetic disturbances.
-
Test Methods: The standard describes comprehensive test requirements including climatic conditions, test sample preparation, test frequency selection, test equipment specifications, and safety considerations. It outlines testing for a broad frequency range to cover various disturbance sources.
-
Classification Criteria: It defines procedures for classification of enclosures according to measured shielding effectiveness, ensuring a consistent and internationally recognized assessment method.
-
Electromagnetic Disturbance Types: While focusing on electromagnetic fields, it highlights the need to consider other perturbations such as lightning strikes and High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) when specifying enclosure protection requirements.
Applications
IEC 61000-5-7 is essential for industries and sectors where electromagnetic interference (EMI) mitigation is critical to the reliability and safety of electrical and electronic equipment. Practical applications include:
-
Telecommunication Cabinets and Subracks: Ensuring adequate shielding to maintain signal integrity and prevent EMI-related failures.
-
Industrial Enclosures: Protecting sensitive instruments from high-frequency interference and transient electromagnetic events.
-
Defense and Aerospace Equipment: Where resistance to high-intensity electromagnetic pulses, such as HEMP, is mandatory.
-
Medical Device Housings: Guaranteeing electromagnetic compatibility to prevent interference with critical medical electronics.
-
Power Electronics and Control Systems: Maintaining immunity in environments with variable and strong electromagnetic fields.
By adhering to IEC 61000-5-7, manufacturers can confidently select, design, and validate enclosures to ensure robust EMC compliance, facilitating international market acceptance and regulatory approval.
Related Standards
IEC 61000-5-7 complements other key IEC EMC standards, such as:
-
IEC 61000-4-x series: Test methods for electromagnetic disturbances, including immunity testing and emission measurements.
-
IEC 61000-5-xx series: Installation and mitigation guidelines for various EMC concerns.
-
IEC 61000-2-xx series: Environment compatibility and classification guidelines.
-
Industry or regional standards focusing on shielding and EMC requirements often reference IEC 61000-5-7 for enclosure specification.
Understanding the interplay between IEC 61000-5-7 and these EMC standards is crucial for comprehensive electromagnetic interference management and system-level EMC assurance.
