IEC 61076-3-110:2016 This detail specification covers mechanical, electrical and environmental requirements and electrical transmission requirements for frequencies up to 3 000 MHz. These connector's transmission requirements are specifically intended for specific pairs of contacts, which are separated from the other pairs of contacts, such as by means of individual pair shields within the connector. These connectors are similar to, intermateable with, and intended to be used with the IEC 60603-7 series connectors. The IEC 60603-7 series connectors are typically used in ISO/IEC 11801 balanced cabling systems. The ISO/IEC 11801 balanced cabling systems are organized by categories according to frequency range and by basic cabling component types, e.g. according to shielding configurations. A primary common feature among the IEC 60603-7 series connectors is backward compatibility to lower frequency categories. The IEC 61076-3-110 series connectors are backward compatible with IEC 60603-7-7, IEC 60603-7-71 and IEC 60603-7-82 connectors. The IEC 61076-3-110 series connectors are not backward compatible with some IEC 60603-7 series connectors. Key words: Connectors, Free and Fixed Data Transmission, 3000 MHz
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61076-3-110:2016 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies detailed product requirements for free and fixed connectors used in electronic equipment for data transmission at frequencies up to 3000 MHz. It defines mechanical, electrical, and environmental criteria, ensuring compatibility and performance in high-frequency data communication applications.
This standard covers connectors that support individual pairs of contacts, which can be shielded separately within a connector to minimize interference. The connectors specified in IEC 61076-3-110 are designed to be intermateable with the widely used IEC 60603-7 series connectors-common in ISO/IEC 11801 balanced cabling systems-while extending functionality to support higher frequencies and additional features.
The revision consolidates transmission requirements for frequencies up to 3000 MHz, thereby addressing modern high-speed data transmission needs effectively.
Key Topics
-
Mechanical Requirements
The standard specifies the design and physical dimensions of both free (plug) and fixed (socket) connectors to guarantee reliable mating and mechanical robustness over repeated use. This includes cable terminations, mounting interfaces, and pin assignments. -
Electrical Characteristics
Key electrical parameters addressed include insertion loss, return loss, propagation delay, delay skew, and various forms of crosstalk-near-end crosstalk (NEXT), far-end crosstalk (FEXT), and alien crosstalk (PSANEXT, PSAFEXT). These ensure optimal signal integrity at frequencies up to 3 GHz. -
Transmission Performance
The specification mandates performance criteria for data transmission up to 3000 MHz, supporting modern high-frequency balanced cabling systems with specific emphasis on performance for separated pairs of contacts, which can be individually shielded. -
Environmental and Climate Classification
Connectors must meet defined environmental conditions with adherence to climate categories, clearance and creepage distances, and adequate current-carrying capacity under operating conditions. -
Intermateability and Backward Compatibility
These connectors maintain backward compatibility with IEC 60603-7-7, IEC 60603-7-71, and IEC 60603-7-82 connectors, facilitating smooth integration into existing systems and incremental upgrades. -
Testing and Quality Assurance
A comprehensive test schedule ensures conformity to mechanical and electrical standards, helping manufacturers and users validate performance, durability, and safety.
Applications
IEC 61076-3-110:2016 connectors are crucial components in high-frequency data transmission systems, widely applicable in:
-
Telecommunications and Networking Equipment
Supporting high-speed data links in structured cabling systems compliant with ISO/IEC 11801 categories. -
Data Centers
Facilitating reliable and high-bandwidth connections for servers and storage equipment where signal integrity is paramount. -
Industrial and Automation Systems
Ensuring robust data communication in electrically noisy environments with specialized shielding configurations. -
Consumer and Professional Electronic Devices
Enabling fast, stable connectivity in advanced audio-visual equipment and computerized systems. -
Infrastructure and Intelligent Building Systems
Providing seamless data pathways for smart monitoring, security, and building automation technologies.
