IEC 61076-3-118:2010 establishes specifications and test requirements for a connector with four contacts plus PE contact, for use in industrial environments. This standard also specifies free and fixed connectors, with round contacts, suitable for screw or crimp terminations. Other terminations techniques, as solder or printed board connections are upon agreement between manufacturer and user. The free and fixed connectors have a push-pull locking mechanism for IP65 and IP67 protection according to IEC 60529. The PE contact is first-make last-break. Connectors according this International Standard are without breaking capacity COC according to IEC 61984, therefore they are not intended to be engaged or disengaged in normal use when live or under load, if not otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61076-3-118:2010 specifies detailed product requirements for rectangular power connectors with 4 poles plus a protective earth (PE) contact. This standard is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and targets connectors used in industrial electronic equipment. The connectors feature a push-pull coupling mechanism, designed to ensure secure and reliable connections while facilitating quick mating and unmating. Protection ratings of IP65 and IP67 are achieved, making these connectors suitable for harsh environments with dust and water exposure.
Designed specifically for industrial applications, the standard covers both fixed (male) and free (female) connector versions. These connectors use round contacts and support termination by screw or crimp methods, with other termination techniques like soldering or printed board connections available upon agreement between manufacturer and user. Notably, these connectors do not have a breaking capacity rating under IEC 61984, indicating they are generally not intended to be connected or disconnected under load unless specified otherwise by the manufacturer.
Key Topics
- Connector Configuration: 4 power poles plus 1 protective earth (PE) contact with first-make last-break sequence to improve safety.
- Coupling Mechanism: Push-pull locking system ensuring secure connections and ease of use in demanding industrial environments.
- Environmental Protection: Compliance with IP65 and IP67 ratings according to IEC 60529, offering dust-tight and water-resistant performance.
- Contact Termination Types: Screw and crimp terminations are standardized; solder and printed board terminations may be used with agreement.
- Mechanical and Electrical Properties: Defined requirements for insertion/withdrawal forces, contact resistance, current-carrying capacity, dielectric strength, and insulation resistance.
- Climatic Categories and Durability: Classification into climatic categories to ensure performance reliability under various temperature and humidity conditions.
- Testing and Qualification: A comprehensive test schedule covers mechanical endurance, electrical performance, environmental resistance, and safety validations.
- Marking and Identification: Requirements for clear marking of insulation materials and connector coding for polarization to prevent mismating.
Applications
IEC 61076-3-118 connectors are crucial components in industrial electronic systems demanding robust and secure power connections with protective earth functionality. Typical applications include:
- Industrial automation and control equipment
- Power distribution modules in factory settings
- Harsh environment installations requiring high ingress protection
- Machinery and heavy equipment electrical interfaces
- Compact electronic assemblies requiring space-efficient and reliable power connectors
These connectors ensure operator safety, system reliability, and ease of maintenance in challenging industrial conditions. Their push-pull coupling mechanism supports quick connection cycles, beneficial for modular systems and frequent equipment changes.
Related Standards
To complement IEC 61076-3-118, consider these related international standards for connector technology and safety:
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) - relevant for understanding ingress protection ratings IP65/IP67.
- IEC 61984: Connectors - safety requirements and tests for connectors with rated voltages and currents.
- IEC 61076-1: Basic connector system standard defining compatibility levels.
- IEC 61076-3-X series: Additional rectangular connector specifications covering other connector configurations and applications.
- ISO/IEC 11801: Generic cabling for customer premises, which may reference power connector requirements in integrated systems.
Using IEC 61076-3-118-compliant connectors ensures conformity with global safety and performance standards, facilitating international system integration and enhancing product marketability.
By adhering to IEC 61076-3-118:2010, manufacturers and system integrators benefit from standardized, reliable, and durable 4-pole plus PE power connectors with effective push-pull coupling, optimized for industrial electronic equipment applications. This results in safer operational practices and improved uptime across industrial installations.
