IEC 61084-2-1:2017 specifies requirements and tests for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) intended for the accommodation, and where necessary for the electrically protective separation, of insulated conductors, cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical and/or communication systems installations. The maximum voltage of these installations is 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC. These systems are intended for mounting on walls and/or ceilings. They can be embedded, installed in a flush or semi-flush state, surface mounted or mounted away from the surface using fixing devices. This document does not apply to conduit systems, cable tray systems, cable ladder systems, power track systems or equipment covered by other standards. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1996. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - classification; - construction; - mechanical and electrical properties. This International Standard is to be used in conjunction with IEC 61084-1:2017.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61084-2-1:2017 specifies the requirements and relevant tests for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) intended for mounting on walls and ceilings in electrical and/or communication system installations. These systems are designed to safely accommodate and, where necessary, provide electrical separation for insulated conductors, cables, and associated electrical equipment in installations with a maximum voltage of up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. The standard outlines the performance and safety criteria for various installation methods, including surface-mounting, flush-mounting, semi-flush, and systems fixed away from walls or ceilings.
This standard is a crucial reference for manufacturers, electrical contractors, and designers aiming to ensure consistent safety and quality in cable management solutions for buildings and infrastructure projects.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Exclusions:
IEC 61084-2-1 applies only to cable trunking and cable ducting systems for walls and ceilings. It does not cover conduit systems, cable tray systems, cable ladder systems, or power track systems, which are governed by separate standards. -
Types of Mounting:
- Embedded in wall or ceiling
- Flush or semi-flush (at least 90% or more than 10% of the product recessed)
- Surface-mounted
- Mounted away from the surface using special fixings
-
System Classifications:
- Type 1: Basic cable containment
- Type 2: Distribution systems (junctions, direction changes, "T" connections)
- Type 3: Systems enabling apparatus mounting
-
Testing and Requirements:
- Marking, documentation, and installation instructions
- Mechanical and electrical properties, such as resistance to compression and impact
- Cable support, deflection, and protection against ingress of liquids
- Construction and assembly competence
-
Documentation:
Manufacturers must provide comprehensive information on system components, classification, functions, usable cross-sectional area for cables, and installation guidelines to maintain declared protection ratings.
Applications
IEC 61084-2-1:2017 is widely used in commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects worldwide. Typical applications include:
-
Commercial Buildings:
Offices, hotels, educational institutions, and retail stores benefit from structured cable management, ensuring organized routing and segregation of power and communication cabling. -
Industrial Facilities:
Factories and processing plants rely on compliant trunking and ducting systems for safety and ease of cable upgrades in harsh environments. -
Data Centers and Communication Hubs:
Secure management of high-density cabling for communication and electrical infrastructure. -
Healthcare and Public Facilities:
Enhanced protection and clear routing of cables in hospitals, airports, and other high-traffic environments.
The standard ensures that systems are safe, functional, and reliable for diverse installation scenarios, minimizing the risk of electrical faults, physical damage, and exposure to contaminants or liquids.
