IEC 61158-3-14:2014 defines the services provided to the Type 14 fieldbus application layer at the boundary between the application and data-link layers of the fieldbus reference model and systems management at the boundary between the data-link layer and systems management of the fieldbus reference model. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2010. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes are: - update the Communication model; - update the primitives and parameters of the DL-management service for FRT applications in 5.4.2; - correct the edit error; - update of the requirements for all conformance classes; - update of the requirements for all conformance services.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61158-3-14:2014 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as part of the IEC 61158 series for industrial communication networks. This section-Part 3-14: Data-link layer service definition – Type 14 elements-specifies the abstract services provided by the Type 14 fieldbus data-link layer to support time-critical, deterministic communication in automation environments. The standard defines the interaction at the boundaries between the data-link layer, the application layer, and systems management within the fieldbus reference model.
This 2014 edition introduces several technical revisions, updating the communication model, refining service primitives and management parameters, correcting editorial errors, and revising requirements for conformance classes and services. These updates enhance the interoperability and deterministic performance critical for modern industrial automation.
Key Topics
- Data-link Layer Services: Defines the basic and management services delivered by the Type 14 data-link layer, clarifying the interaction with higher application layers and systems management in the OSI-based fieldbus reference model.
- Time-critical Messaging: Focuses on deterministic and real-time data exchanges, defining service primitives and their parameters, sequences, and relationships necessary for reliable automation control.
- Communication Scheduling: Describes mechanisms for both free competitive (CSMA/CD-based) and deterministic, time-shared scheduling, supporting fast real-time (FRT) and regular industrial applications.
- DL-Management (DLMS) Services: Outlines management actions such as non-periodic data annunciation and the support for flexible communications management in varied process scenarios.
- Protocol Integration: Establishes compatibility with recognized protocols and standards, such as ISO/IEC 8802-3 (Ethernet), UDP, TCP, and IP, ensuring network versatility and future-proofing automation systems.
Applications
IEC 61158-3-14:2014 applies to industrial automation systems where precise real-time performance is essential. Typical application areas include:
- Factory and Process Automation: Ensures timely, synchronized data delivery among controllers, sensors, and actuators, minimizing risks to equipment and personnel.
- Machinery Control: Supports integration of multiple devices requiring deterministic messaging, such as drives, robots, and automated production lines.
- Safety-critical Environments: Delivers reliable, bounded-latency communication necessary for alerts, alarms, and emergency control signals.
- Interoperable Automation Networks: Facilitates seamless interoperation between devices from different manufacturers using standardized services and protocols.
- Migration of Legacy Systems: Provides structured pathways for upgrading older fieldbus implementations to modern, Ethernet-based real-time networks with minimum disruption.
By leveraging both connection-oriented and connectionless transfer modes and supporting both periodic and event-driven (non-periodic) data exchange, the standard addresses the diverse needs of industrial communication.
Related Standards
Several key standards are referenced or closely related to IEC 61158-3-14:2014, providing a foundation for its service definitions and implementation in industrial environments:
- IEC 61158 Series: Comprehensive set of standards for fieldbus technology specifying physical, data-link, application, and management layers.
- IEC 61784-1 / IEC 61784-2: Define communication profile families and protocol combinations for industrial communication networks.
- IEC 61588: Specifies the precision clock synchronization protocol essential for time-critical communication.
