IEC 61158-3-16:2007 defines in an abstract way the externally visible service provided by the Type 16 fieldbus data-link layer in terms of: - the primitive actions and events of the service; - the parameters associated with each primitive action and event, and the form which they take; - and the interrelationship between these actions and events, and their valid sequences. This first edition and its companion parts of the IEC 61158-3 subseries cancel and replace IEC 61158-3:2003. This edition of this part constitutes a technical addition. This publication along with its companion parts for Type 16, replaces also partially IEC 61401:2001. This edition includes the following changes: - deletion of the former Type 6 fieldbus, and the placeholder for a Type 5 fieldbus data-link layer, for lack of market relevance; - addition of new types of fieldbuses; - division of this part into multiple parts numbered 3-1, 3-2,..., 3-19. This bilingual version (2013-07) corresponds to the monolingual English version, published in 2007-12.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61158-3-16:2007 - titled Industrial communication networks – Fieldbus specifications – Part 3-16: Data‑link layer service definition – Type 16 elements - defines the abstract, externally visible services provided by a Type 16 fieldbus data‑link layer. The standard specifies the service primitives, associated parameters, and the valid sequences and relationships of those actions and events. Its primary aim is to describe conceptual data‑link services suitable for time‑critical communications in industrial automation, supplementing the OSI Basic Reference Model for fieldbus protocol development.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Service primitives and events: Definitions of request/confirm and indication/response primitives that the data‑link layer exposes to the application layer and to systems management.
- Parameters and formats: Specification of the parameters associated with each primitive and the form they take (abstract level - implementation specifics like octet ordering are not prescribed).
- Valid sequences and relationships: Rules describing allowed ordering and interaction between primitives/events to ensure correct service behavior.
- Time‑critical messaging support: Concepts for communications with deterministic timing requirements (time windows, completion certainty).
- Service scope: Boundaries between the Type 16 fieldbus application layer, the data‑link layer, and systems management.
- Implementation guidance: Intended as a basis for DL‑programming interfaces, while noting that details such as multi‑octet sizes, octet ordering, and primitive correlation must be addressed by implementers.
- Conformance model: The document does not define product conformance to the service definition itself - conformance is achieved through implementations of corresponding Type 16 data‑link protocols.
Applications and who uses it
- Industrial automation vendors and system integrators designing or implementing fieldbus data‑link protocols for time‑critical control systems.
- Protocol architects creating deterministic messaging services between controllers, I/O devices, safety systems, and real‑time subsystems.
- Software engineers developing DL‑programming interfaces and middleware that bridge application-layer logic to Type 16 data‑link services.
- System architects and standards specialists aligning new or legacy fieldbus solutions with IEC/OSI reference models and migration paths.
Related standards and notes
- Part of the IEC 61158 series (fieldbus specifications) and aligns with ISO/IEC 7498 (OSI Basic Reference Model) and ISO/IEC 10731 (service conventions).
- This edition replaces earlier IEC 61158-3:2003 content for Type 16 and partially supersedes IEC 61491:2001; the series has been restructured into parts 3‑1 through 3‑19.
- Note: Use of some protocol types may be subject to intellectual‑property restrictions; implementers should verify IPR licensing requirements.
