This part of IEC 61249 gives requirements for properties of phenolic cellulose paper, reinforced copper-clad laminated sheets of high electrical grade in thicknesses of 0,8 mm to 3,2 mm. This standard covers materials with different requirements on flammability and are designated according to the following: Material 61249-2-2-1; Material 61249-2-2-2; and Material 61249-2-2-3.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61249-2-2:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifies the requirements for phenolic cellulose paper-reinforced laminated sheets of high electrical grade, copper-clad and unclad, intended for use in printed boards and other interconnecting structures. The standard ensures consistency in material quality, electrical properties, and flammability classifications for these base materials, which are widely used in the electronics and PCB manufacturing industries.
Key Topics
- Material Properties and Composition:
- Details requirements for phenolic cellulose paper as the reinforcing material.
- Covers phenolic resin systems, which may be modified or unmodified.
- Specifies the use of copper foil, particularly Type A (electro-deposited copper) for cladding.
- Thickness Range:
- Applicable to sheets with thicknesses between 0.8 mm and 3.2 mm.
- Flammability Requirements:
- Defines three material grades based on flammability:
- 61249-2-2-1: General purpose, no defined flammability requirement.
- 61249-2-2-2: Defined flammability (horizontal burning test).
- 61249-2-2-3: Defined flammability (vertical burning test).
- Defines three material grades based on flammability:
- Quality and Performance Testing:
- Includes guidelines for electrical properties, mechanical characteristics, dimensional stability, and water absorption.
- Stipulates test methods and ensures conformity through quality assurance and inspection requirements.
- Marking and Traceability:
- Requires manufacturer identification on each sheet to ensure traceability.
- Specifies marking colours to correspond to material grade and flammability classification.
Applications
IEC 61249-2-2:2005 is integral in several electronics industry applications, including:
- Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs): Used as the base material for single-sided and some double-sided PCBs in consumer electronics, appliances, and light industrial systems.
- Interconnecting Structures: Serves as a reliable insulator and structural support for removable connectors or wiring systems.
- Flame-Resistant Electronics Enclosures: The classified flammability options enable selection based on end-use requirements for fire safety and compliance.
- Cost-Effective PCB Production: Materials covered provide a balance between electrical performance and economical manufacturing, making them suitable for high-volume, cost-sensitive products.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers ensure reliable electrical insulation, consistent mechanical performance, and compatibility with global environmental and quality assurance processes.
Related Standards
For organizations and engineers working with phenolic cellulose paper reinforced copper-clad laminates, the following standards are also relevant:
- IEC 61249-2-1: Economic grade phenolic cellulose paper reinforced laminated sheets, copper-clad.
- IEC 61189-2: Test methods for materials for interconnection structures, including electrical and non-electrical properties.
