IEC 61275:2013 is applicable to a portable or transportable photon spectrometry assembly using a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector to survey, in situ, generally at 1 m above ground level, areas in the environment for discrete radionuclides. This standard specifies for such an assembly the general characteristics and test methods for evaluating radiation, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics specific to the applications described above. Advice is also provided in annexes as to the calibration, appropriate use and interpretation of the system for in situ measurements. The main technical changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: - encompass the latest technologies; - revise test methods to account for methodological developments and performance criteria with the latest HPGe detector technologies and digital electronics.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61275:2013 is an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard focusing on radiation protection instrumentation-specifically, the measurement of discrete radionuclides in the environment using in situ photon spectrometry systems based on high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. This standard is designed for portable or transportable systems typically deployed approximately 1 meter above ground to quickly assess areas for the presence of discrete radionuclides.
IEC 61275:2013 sets out the general characteristics, test methods, and performance criteria necessary to ensure accurate and reliable measurements in environmental applications. It also provides detailed advice on calibration, system use, and data interpretation.
Key Topics
-
System Components:
- HPGe detector (N-type or P-type, with integral cryostat and preamplifier)
- Spectroscopy amplifier and high-voltage power electronics
- Data acquisition, recording, and display equipment (e.g., MCA, PC-based systems)
- System power supply (battery or mains)
- Tripod or stable platform for field measurements
- Detector cooling system (liquid nitrogen or electromechanical cooler)
- Supporting cables and mechanical structures
-
Test and Performance Criteria:
- Radiation characteristics: Verification of energy range, angular response, and energy resolution
- Electrical performance: Assessment of power supply reliability, battery and mains operation, signal integrity
- Mechanical robustness: Resistance to vibration, shock, and environmental factors ensuring durability during transport and use
- Safety and decontamination: Compliance with relevant safety standards (IEC 61010-1) and ease of decontamination after field use
- Environmental resilience: Functionality at temperature extremes, variable humidity, and resistance to wind and electromagnetic interference
-
System Calibration and Operation:
- Recommendations for proper calibration to maintain measurement accuracy
- Guidance for interpreting data and ensuring reliable radionuclide identification
- Emphasis on the importance of documentation and operational transparency
Applications
The scope of IEC 61275:2013 is tailored to practical field measurements of discrete radionuclides using a portable or transportable in situ photon spectrometry system. Key use cases include:
- Environmental Monitoring: Rapid surveying of terrestrial environments for radioactive contamination or naturally occurring radionuclides in soil and air.
- Radiation Protection: Assessing free air exposure rates to inform decision-making in emergency response, remediation, or regulatory compliance activities.
- Field Surveys: Supporting environmental assessments following nuclear incidents, routine site monitoring, or in research applications requiring high-resolution photon spectrometry.
- Public Health and Safety: Providing quantitative data to guide follow-up actions, such as more intensive sampling programs or implementation of remediation measures.
These systems are essential for organizations involved in nuclear safety, environmental protection agencies, laboratories performing radiological assessments, and emergency response teams.
Related Standards
- IEC 60068: Environmental testing-general test methods referenced for confirming the durability and resilience of equipment under field conditions.
- IEC 61010-1: Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use.
- IEC 61187: Documentation standards for electrical and electronic measuring equipment.

Practical Value
IEC 61275:2013 supports the deployment of reliable, precise, and safe in situ photon spectrometry systems based on HPGe detectors. By explicitly defining system requirements, performance benchmarks, and testing protocols, it ensures that users can trust their instrumentation for consistent environmental radiation surveys. Organizations adhering to this standard benefit from enhanced measurement credibility, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency in a wide range of radiation protection and environmental monitoring activities.
Proper implementation of this standard is crucial for field teams, manufacturers, and regulators aiming to standardize approaches to measuring discrete radionuclides in diverse environments.
