IEC 61280-4-1: 2019 is applicable to the measurement of attenuation of installed optical fibre cabling plant using multimode optical fibre. This cabling plant can include multimode optical fibres, connectors, adapters, splices, and other passive devices. The cabling can be installed in a variety of environments including residential, commercial, industrial, and data centre premises, as well as outside plant environments. The test equipment used in this document has one single fibre connector interface or two single fibre connector interfaces. In this document, the optical fibres that are addressed include sub-categories A1-OMx, where x = 2, 3, 4 and 5 (50/125 μm) and A1-OM1 (62,5/125 μm) multimode optical fibres, as specified in IEC 60793-2-10. The attenuation measurements of the other multimode categories can be made using the approaches of this document, but the source conditions for the other categories have not been defined. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) changes to Annex F on encircled flux to harmonise with IEC TR 62614-2, but keeping the encircled flux limits defined in Tables F.2 to F.5 unchanged; b) addition of an equipment cord method in Annex D; c) inclusion of testing bend insensitive multimode optical fibre; d) updates to measurement uncertainty; e) definition of additional cabling configurations; f) changes to Table 5 on spectral requirements. Keywords: measurement of attenuation The contents of the corrigendum of April 2020 and December 2022 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61280-4-1:2019 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines measurement procedures for determining the attenuation of installed multimode optical fibre cabling. This standard applies to optical fibre communication systems within residential, commercial, industrial, and data centre environments, as well as outside plant cabling installations. Accurate attenuation measurement is critical to ensuring the performance and reliability of fibre-optic networks, supporting robust communication infrastructures for modern data transmission.
Key elements of the cabling plant covered include multimode optical fibres, connectors, adapters, splices, and passive devices. This standard is essential for system designers, installers, and testers who need to verify optical network compliance and quality after installation.
Key Topics
- Applicability to Multimode Fibre Types: The standard covers attenuation testing for fibre sub-categories A1-OMx (x=2, 3, 4, 5; 50/125 μm) and A1-OM1 (62.5/125 μm), as defined in IEC 60793-2-10.
- Comprehensive Test Methods: IEC 61280-4-1:2019 standardizes several attenuation measurement techniques, such as the 1-cord, 2-cord, and 3-cord methods, equipment cord method, and use of optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs).
- Measurement Uncertainty and Connector Grades: Guidance is provided for understanding and calculating measurement uncertainty, taking into account the quality and grade of test cord connectors.
- Encircled Flux Requirements: Updated requirements for launch conditions of multimode fibres to harmonize with related documents, ensuring repeatable and comparable measurements.
- Bend Insensitive Fibre: Inclusion of specific guidance for testing bend insensitive multimode optical fibres, reflecting advancements in fibre technology.
- Spectral Requirements: Revised criteria for source wavelengths and launch conditions to reflect industry best practices.
- Additional Cabling Configurations: Definition of testing approaches for more cabling configurations, supporting evolving installation practices.
Applications
IEC 61280-4-1:2019 is vital for:
- Fibre-Optic Network Verification: Ensuring newly installed cabling meets specified attenuation limits, supporting reliable network performance.
- Quality Assurance: Establishing a standardized basis for acceptance testing and documentation of multimode optical fibre installations.
- Network Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Providing repeatable methods for diagnosing increased losses and localizing faults such as poor connections, splices, or damaged fibre.
- Vendor and Installer Compliance: Enabling manufacturers, integrators, and installers to demonstrate compliance with international standards for customer assurance.
- Supporting Upgrades and Expansions: Verifying existing fibre plants during capacity expansions in high-speed data centres, enterprise networks, or critical infrastructure.
Related Standards
- IEC 60793-2-10: Specifies the categories of multimode optical fibres referenced in attenuation measurements.
- IEC 60825-2: Covers safety aspects of optical fibre communication systems.
- IEC 61280 Series: Includes additional parts covering other fibre-optic subsystem test procedures.
- IEC TR 62614-2: Addresses encircled flux measurement for multimode fibre, related to launch condition requirements harmonized in IEC 61280-4-1.
