IEC 61290-1:2022 applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs) and optically amplified subsystems. It applies to OAs using optically pumped fibres (optical fibre amplifiers (OFAs) based on either rare-earth doped fibres or on the Raman effect), semiconductors (semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs)), and aveguides (planar optical waveguide amplifiers (POWAs)). It is specifically directed to single-channel amplifiers. Test methods for multichannel amplifiers are defined in the IEC 61290-10 series. This document establishes uniform requirements for accurate and reliable measurements of the following OA parameters, as defined in IEC 61291-1:2018, Clause 3: a) nominal output signal power; b) gain; c) reverse gain; d) maximum gain; e) maximum gain wavelength; f) maximum gain variation with temperature; g) gain wavelength band; h) gain wavelength variation; i) gain stability; j) polarization-dependent gain; k) gain ripple (SOA only); l) large-signal output stability; m) saturation output power; n) maximum output signal power; o) maximum total output power. NOTE 1 The applicability of the test methods described in this document to distributed Raman amplifiers is still under study. NOTE 2 All numerical values followed by (‡) are suggested values for which the measurement is assured. Other values are acceptable if verified. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - specification of gain ripple as a new parameter; - specification of test method and test report for gain ripple measurements; - use of the term “measurement uncertainty” instead of “measurement accuracy”.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61290-1:2022 - Optical amplifiers - Test methods - Part 1: Power and gain parameters is the 2022 edition of the IEC international standard that defines uniform, repeatable test methods and reporting for single-channel optical amplifiers (OAs) and optically amplified subsystems. It applies to optical fibre amplifiers (rare-earth doped and Raman), semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and planar optical waveguide amplifiers (POWAs). This edition updates the 2014 standard, adds gain ripple as a specified parameter, and replaces the term “measurement accuracy” with measurement uncertainty.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Single-channel OAs (multichannel methods are in the IEC 61290-10 series). Applicability to distributed Raman amplifiers is under study.
- Measured parameters: nominal output signal power, gain, reverse gain, maximum gain and its wavelength, gain variation with temperature, gain wavelength band and variation, gain stability, polarization-dependent gain, gain ripple (SOA only), large-signal output stability, saturation output power, maximum output signal power and total output power.
- Test methods: The standard requires following one of three measurement procedures:
- Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA) method (IEC 61290-1-1)
- Electrical Spectrum Analyzer (ESA) method (IEC 61290-1-2)
- Optical power meter with bandpass filter method (IEC 61290-1-3)
- Measurement practice: Defines step sizes (e.g., wavelength steps < 1 nm near ASE peak where applicable), monitoring procedures for polarization and temporal instabilities, and guidance on reporting measurement uncertainty. Numerical values marked (‡) are suggested assurance values; other values may be acceptable if verified.
- New/changed elements: formal test and report procedures for gain ripple; emphasis on uncertainty quantification.
Practical applications
- Product characterization and datasheet validation for OAs (OFA, SOA, POWA)
- Manufacturing quality control and production testing
- R&D and performance benchmarking across wavelength and temperature
- Procurement specifications and interoperability verification for optical systems
- Regulatory and conformity testing where standardized measurement methods are required
Who should use this standard
- Component and subsystem manufacturers (fiber amplifier, SOA, POWA vendors)
- Test laboratories and QA teams performing optical amplifier measurements
- System integrators and telecom operators specifying amplifier performance
- Standards and regulatory bodies referencing consistent test procedures
