IEC 61290-1-1:2015 applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs) and optically amplified modules. It applies to OAs using optically pumped fibres (OFAs based on either rare-earth doped fibres or on the Raman effect), semiconductor OAs (SOAs) and planar optical waveguide amplifiers (POWAs). The object of this standard is to establish uniform requirements for accurate and reliable measurements, by means of the optical spectrum analyzer test method, of the following OA parameters, as defined in IEC 61291-1: - nominal output signal power; - gain; - polarization-dependent gain; - maximum output signal power; - maximum total output power. The object of this standard is specifically directed to single-channel amplifiers. For multichannel amplifiers, one should refer to the IEC 61290-10 series. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2006 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: updates on the characteristics of measurement apparatus and revised list of addressed optical amplifier parameters. Keywords: optical amplifiers, optical spectrum analyzer test, single-channel amplifiers
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61290-1-1:2015 defines a uniform optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) test method for measuring power and gain parameters of single‑channel optical amplifiers. Applicable to erbium/rare‑earth doped fibre amplifiers, Raman OFAs, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and planar optical waveguide amplifiers (POWAs), this third edition updates measurement‑apparatus characteristics and the list of addressed amplifier parameters to ensure accurate, repeatable results for commercial OAs and optically amplified modules.
Key topics
- Measured parameters (as defined in IEC 61291-1):
- Nominal output signal power
- Gain
- Polarization‑dependent gain (PDG)
- Maximum output signal power
- Maximum total output power
- Test focus: single‑channel amplifiers (multichannel amplifiers are covered by the IEC 61290‑10 series).
- Apparatus requirements (representative highlights from the standard):
- Optical source: fixed or tunable CW sources with spectral linewidth < 1 nm and side‑mode suppression > 30 dB for lasers.
- Optical spectrum analyzer (OSA): spectral linearity better than ±0.5 dB, amplitude stability ≤ ±0.2 dB, wavelength uncertainty ≤ ±0.5 nm, spectral resolution ≤ 1 nm.
- Optical power meter: uncertainty better than ±0.2 dB across OA bandwidth.
- Accessories: optical isolators, variable attenuators, polarization controllers, low‑reflectance fibre jumpers and repeatable connectors (connection loss repeatability ≤ ±0.2 dB).
- Measurement practices: bracketing amplifiers with isolators to avoid oscillation, maintaining input polarization for PDG and other measurements, and using calibration configurations illustrated in the standard.
Applications
- Manufacturers: product verification, specification sheets and quality control for OFAs, SOAs and POWAs.
- Test labs / OEMs: conformance testing, acceptance testing and performance benchmarking using the OSA test method.
- Systems engineers: characterizing amplifier behavior (gain, PDG, maximum power) for link design, margin analysis and interoperability assessments.
- Procurement/compliance teams: validating supplier claims against internationally recognized test methods.
