IEC 61300-2-10:2021 evaluates the effect of loads which is possible to occur when fibre optic devices are exposed to critical situations such as being stepped on, being run over by vehicle tyres, when an evenly-distributed static load is applied to the top surface of a street cabinet or when a load is applied to a street cabinet's open door. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2012. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of testing an evenly distributed static load applied on the top surface of a street cabinet; - addition of testing a static load applied to a street cabinet door; - addition of descriptions to perform the test at a specified temperature other as specified in the standard atmospheric conditions and addition of test temperature(s) in Table 1; - update of the severities according to IEC 61753-1:2018.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-2-10:2021 - "Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-10: Tests – Crush and load resistance" specifies standardized test methods to evaluate the mechanical resistance of fibre‑optic devices when exposed to crushing and static loading. The third edition (2021) updates severities to align with IEC 61753-1:2018, and adds tests for an evenly distributed static load on the top surface of a street cabinet, a static load on a street‑cabinet door, and optional temperature‑specified testing.
Key Topics
- Scope: Tests simulate real‑world critical situations - being stepped on, run over by tyres, loads on street cabinets or open cabinet doors.
- Apparatus requirements:
- Plate/ground: Minimum 10 mm steel plate on a non‑yielding surface with rounded edges.
- Pad: Minimum 10 mm thick steel pad (flat circular surface); typical pad diameter 5.6 cm (~25 cm²).
- Force generator and gauge: Smoothly apply and measure specified loads.
- Temperature chamber: When tests are specified at non‑ambient temperatures, maintain ±2 °C.
- Test procedure (high level):
- DUT preparation and pre‑conditioning
- Initial visual and optical measurements (attenuation, return loss)
- Device mounting and controlled application of load (crush or distributed)
- Conditioning, recovery, and final examinations/measurements
- Load application details:
- For cabinet doors, force is applied at the point producing the highest hinge moment.
- For evenly distributed top‑surface loads, apparatus and load axes are described for consistent test reproducibility.
- Severity levels: Defined in Table 1 of the standard and updated per IEC 61753‑1:2018.
Applications
- Manufacturers of fibre‑optic connectors, closures, hardened components - to verify mechanical robustness and support product design decisions.
- Test laboratories and quality assurance teams - to perform repeatable crush and load resistance testing for compliance and reporting.
- Network operators and system integrators - to specify acceptance criteria for outdoor cabinets, street furniture and field‑deployed components.
- Procurement and certification bodies - to reference consistent, internationally recognized test methods in specifications and conformity assessment.
