IEC 61300-2-12:2009 evaluates the ability of a passive fibre optic device or a closure to withstand impacts likely to be encountered during usage. The impact may be a localized impact, a series of impacts with hard objects, or an impact normally associated with dropping the device. In this third edition, the impact test with a steel ball has been added. The contents of the corrigendum of June 2011 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-2-12:2009 is an international standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on the impact resistance testing of passive fibre optic devices and interconnecting components. This standard outlines basic test and measurement procedures to evaluate how well fibre optic components withstand various types of impact stresses encountered during normal use. It is the third edition and integrates the impact test method involving a steel ball, enhancing the robustness of evaluation methods.
This standard plays a critical role in ensuring the durability and reliability of fibre optic systems used in telecommunications and data transmission by defining standardized impact tests that simulate real-world conditions such as drops or collisions with hard objects.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
- Evaluates the resistance of passive fibre optic devices or closures to impacts.
- Covers localized impacts, repeated impacts with hard objects, and drop-related impacts.
- Focus on maintaining device functionality despite impact stresses.
Test Methods
- Method A – Pendulum Drop:
- The specimen, attached to a cable, swings like a pendulum and strikes a steel impact surface.
- Assesses impacts from controlled swinging motions to simulate movement-induced shocks.
- Method B – Steel Ball Impact:
- A 1 kg steel ball is dropped onto the specimen positioned on a smooth, hard surface.
- Designed to simulate localized impacts from hard objects.
- Method C – Free Drop of Specimen:
- The specimen is dropped freely from a predetermined height onto a hard surface.
- Simulates impacts from accidental drops during handling or transit.
Apparatus and Setup
- Specifications for attaching fixtures, impact surfaces, and apparatus dimensions are provided to standardize testing setup.
- Ensures repeatability and consistency of impact tests across different laboratories and manufacturers.
Testing Procedures
- Preparation involves cleaning and conditioning specimens to standard test conditions.
- Initial visual and functional examinations according to IEC 61300-3-1 prior to impact testing.
- Defined drop heights and specimen orientations to simulate real-life impact scenarios.
- Post-impact assessments ensure the device meets performance criteria without functional impairment.
Applications
IEC 61300-2-12:2009 is essential for:
- Manufacturers of fibre optic components who require standardized testing protocols to validate product durability and quality.
- Telecommunications industry to ensure reliable passive components in optical networks can withstand physical stress during installation and maintenance.
- Quality assurance and compliance laboratories for independent verification of component robustness under impact stress.
- Design validation of fibre optic interconnections in harsh environmental conditions including outdoor, industrial, and military applications.
By employing this standard, stakeholders can reduce failure rates due to mechanical damage, improve customer satisfaction, and comply with international quality benchmarks.
Related Standards
For comprehensive testing and standardization of fibre optic components, IEC 61300-2-12:2009 should be used alongside:
- IEC 61300-1: Basic test and measurement procedures – General guidance applicable to all fibre optic devices.
- IEC 61300-3-1: Visual examination and measurements – Essential for initial and post-test inspection of specimens.
- IEC 61753-1: Performance standards for fibre optic interconnecting devices, detailing performance criteria including environmental stress tests.
These standards collectively support a robust framework for evaluating mechanical, optical, and environmental performance of fibre optic passive components.
Ensuring your fibre optic interconnecting devices conform to IEC 61300-2-12:2009 impact testing guarantees enhanced durability against mechanical shocks and helps maintain the integrity and performance of optical networks worldwide.
