IEC 61300-2-21:2009 determines the resistance of a fibre optic device to the deteriorative effects of high temperature, humidity and cold conditions. It is intended to reveal defects in a device under test (DUT) caused by breathing as opposed to absorption of moisture. The test covers the effect of the freezing of trapped water in cracks and fissures as well as condensation. However, the degree of condensation will vary depending on the size and thermal mass of the DUT. The changes with respect to the previous edition are: - to reconsider the whole parts of the standard; - to describe the apparatus and procedure in greater details; - to define with precision the number of 24 cycles in the severity.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-2-21:2009 is an international standard published by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), focusing on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This standard defines the test and measurement procedures for assessing the resistance of fibre optic devices to the combined deteriorative effects of high temperature, humidity, and cold. Specifically, it evaluates the robustness of devices under cyclic temperature and humidity conditions to ensure long-term reliability in demanding environments.
Designed for use by manufacturers and testing laboratories, IEC 61300-2-21:2009 is essential for verifying product performance and quality in fibre optic components. The standard is widely recognized and referenced throughout the fibre optics industry.
Key Topics
- Composite Temperature/Humidity Testing: This standard describes a cyclic test combining high and low-temperature exposures with varying humidity, simulating real-world environmental stresses on fibre optic devices.
- Detection of Moisture-Related Defects: The procedure is intended to reveal defects caused by "breathing" (moisture ingress and egress) rather than absorption, including issues from condensation and freezing of trapped water.
- Test Apparatus and Procedures: The standard provides detailed specifications for test chamber construction and operation, including humidity and temperature controls.
- Severity and Cycle Definition: The standard precisely defines the number of test cycles (10 by default), the sub-zero excursions, and the temperature/humidity profiles, enhancing test reproducibility.
- Measurement and Examination: Guidelines are established for pre-test conditioning, interim and final examinations, and measurement criteria to assess the device under test (DUT) both optically and mechanically.
- Scope of Applicability: While targeted at fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, the standard is relevant for any device exposed to severe environmental cycling.
Applications
IEC 61300-2-21:2009 is applicable in a variety of contexts within the fibre optic industry:
- Product Qualification: Ensures that fibre optic connectors, adapters, and other passive components can withstand environmental stress typical of their field installation or operation.
- Quality Assurance: Used during the design validation and manufacturing stages to confirm the reliability of products before market release.
- Compliance Testing: Facilitates standardized procedures for meeting international requirements, making products suitable for global markets.
- Research and Development: Helps engineers identify potential failure modes related to moisture ingress and thermal cycling, guiding product improvement.
- Operational Reliability Assessments: Supports network operators and system integrators in choosing components that meet stringent durability criteria.

Practical Value
Adhering to IEC 61300-2-21:2009 is vital for organizations aiming to prove the environmental robustness of fibre optic devices. Compliance ensures:
- Enhanced product reliability and service life
- Reduced maintenance costs due to early detection of potential failure mechanisms
- Greater confidence for end-users and customers in harsh or variable climate applications
- Simplified international market access through standardized testing regimens
For manufacturers, testing laboratories, and network operators, IEC 61300-2-21 delivers a robust foundation for assessing the durability and quality of fibre optic components subjected to extreme temperature and humidity cycling.
