IEC 61300-2-48:2009 details a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic device or closure to withstand variations in humidity and temperature that may occur during operation, storage and/or transport. The test is intended to indicate the performance of such devices when exposed to heat and humidity followed by short-term freezing. The main changes to this second edition are the addition of the Category O cycle procedure and the severity reconsideration.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-2-48:2009 is part of the IEC 61300 series that defines basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This edition specifies a temperature-humidity cycling procedure used to determine whether a fibre optic device or closure can withstand variations in temperature and humidity encountered during operation, storage and transport. The test sequence exposes specimens to high temperature and humidity followed by short-term freezing to reveal moisture-related degradation, softening, expansion, embrittlement and ice formation effects.
Key editorial changes in this second edition include the addition of the Category O cycle procedure and a reconsideration of test severity levels.
Key Topics
- Test objective: Assess durability and performance of fibre optic interconnects when subjected to cyclic heat, humidity and freezing.
- Apparatus: Environmental chamber capable of controlled temperature and humidity; optical source and detector compliant with IEC 61300-3-4 for attenuation monitoring. The chamber must avoid contamination, prevent condensed water from falling on specimens, and use deionized water for humidity generation.
- Procedures:
- Preparation & preconditioning: Prepare specimens per manufacturer or relevant specification; precondition specimens for 2 h at standard conditions (IEC 61300-1).
- Method A (Category O example): Rapid transitions between high and low temperatures with 14 cycles. Dwell times are a minimum of 2 h; rapid transition steps (max 20 min) are used to maximize condensation. Relative humidity control specifies 95 % RH at dwell points (±5 % tolerance).
- Method B: Higher severity option with up to 42 cycles from the upper temperature limit to −40 °C. Rate of temp change ≥ 1 °C/min and dwell times at least 1 h. Humidity control profiles include 85 % RH at 23 °C and a nominal change to 20 % RH at the upper temperature.
- Measurements: Continuous or periodic attenuation monitoring throughout the test; final examinations per IEC 61300-3-1 and IEC 61300-3-4 to detect permanent damage or attenuation out-of-spec conditions.
- Recovery: After testing, specimens remain at standard conditions for 2 h and are cleaned per manufacturer instructions prior to final measurements.
- Severity: Determined by temperature range, humidity levels and number of cycles; Table 1 in the standard provides recommended severity levels and examples.
Applications
This test is essential for manufacturers, test labs and procurement teams who need to:
- Validate connector housings, closures, and passive fibre components for harsh environments.
- Confirm long-term optical performance (attenuation stability) after environmental exposure.
- Support product qualification for storage, transport and field deployment where moisture and freeze/thaw cycles are expected.
