IEC 61300-3-21:2014 is a method to measure the switching time and related performance parameters of an optical switch when the actuation energy is applied or removed to change the state of the switch. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - removal of "bounce time" from the title; - update and alignment of definitions with IEC 60876-1; - generalization of the detection apparatus beyond an oscilloscope. Keywords: switching time, performance parameters of an optical switch, actuation energy
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-3-21:2014 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the method for measuring the switching time and related performance parameters of optical switches used in fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This second edition, published in 2014, replaces the initial 1998 version and introduces key technical revisions to enhance testing accuracy and applicability.
The standard provides a clear and generalized testing procedure to evaluate how quickly an optical switch transitions between states when actuation energy is applied or removed. It addresses components crucial to high-speed fiber optic communication systems, ensuring reliable operation and consistency in performance measurements.
Key Topics
-
Switching Time Measurement
The standard defines switching time as the total elapsed time involving latency, rise or fall time, and previously bounce time (now removed from the title). This quantifies how swiftly an optical switch transitions between isolated and conducting states. -
Latency Time
The interval from the application or removal of actuation energy until the output power reaches a defined percentage (10% or 90%) of its steady-state value in the specified switching direction. -
Rise Time and Fall Time
The durations during which the output power rises from 10% to 90%, or falls from 90% to 10%, respectively, of the steady-state conducting power level. -
Testing Apparatus
The procedure requires a stable optical source, an excitation unit for providing actuation energy, detectors to measure output power, and a data acquisition system (DAS). The standard generalizes the detection apparatus beyond traditional oscilloscopes, allowing newer technologies to be employed. -
Scope of Measurement
Evaluations apply specifically to optical switches when their state changes due to the presence or absence of actuation energy, supporting devices like latching switches in fibre optic networks. -
Alignment with Other IEC Standards
Definitions and procedures have been aligned and updated with IEC 60876-1, ensuring consistency across fibre optic standardization documents.
Applications
-
Optical Network Component Testing
IEC 61300-3-21:2014 assists manufacturers in verifying the performance of optical switches used in telecommunications infrastructure, data centers, and other high-speed optical networks. -
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Enables standardized testing across different device models and manufacturers, ensuring devices meet critical switching speed requirements necessary for reliable signal routing. -
Research and Development
Provides a framework for measuring and optimizing switching characteristics during the design and prototyping phases of fibre optic components. -
System Integration
Helps system integrators assess and select optical switches that meet specified latency and switching time specifications necessary for fast signal switching and minimal transmission interruptions.
