IEC 61300-3-4:2012 describes the various methods available to measure the attenuation of optical components. It is not, however, applicable to dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) components, for which IEC 61300-3-29 should be used. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2001. It constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - revision of source conditions, launch conditions and power meter parameters; - addition of safety recommendations; - removal of launch condition details for multimode fibres, now referenced in 61300-1. Key words: measure the attenuation of optical components
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-3-4:2012 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the basic test and measurement procedures to accurately measure the attenuation of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This third edition provides a comprehensive technical revision that updates source and launch conditions, power meter parameters, and includes safety recommendations. It is essential for ensuring precise attenuation measurements in optical components, though it excludes dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) components, which are covered under IEC 61300-3-29.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Focuses on attenuation measurement methods for fibre optic components with two-port configurations, applicable to various terminations such as bare fibre, connector plugs, and receptacles.
- Measurement Methods:
- Optical Power Meter Methods
- Cutback method
- Substitution method
- Insertion methods (A, B, C) tailored to different device under test (DUT) configurations
- Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR): Alternative technique with bidirectional measurement procedures for evaluating attenuation and reflective events.
- Optical Power Meter Methods
- Apparatus and Setup: Detailed requirements for launch conditions, stable light sources, power meters, temporary joints, and reference adaptors to maintain accuracy and repeatability in measurements.
- Precautions: Guidelines preventing nonlinear scattering effects and modal distribution changes in multimode fibres, emphasizing fixed fibre positioning to minimize bending loss and the influence of polarization dependent loss (PDL) on attenuation results.
- Safety Recommendations: Incorporation of laser safety standards to protect operators during attenuation testing.
Applications
IEC 61300-3-4:2012 is indispensable for:
- Manufacturers of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components ensuring component quality and performance through standardized attenuation testing.
- Test laboratories conducting certification and acceptance measurements in the optical communications industry.
- Designers and engineers needing reliable attenuation data to optimize fibre optic networks and assemblies.
- Quality control processes within production environments to identify defects or degradation affecting signal loss.
- Educational and research institutions focusing on optical fibre measurement techniques and standards compliance.
Related Standards
- IEC 61300-3-29: Specific to measurement methods for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) components.
- IEC 61300-1:2011: Provides general guidance and overarching test procedures for fibre optic interconnecting and passive devices.
- IEC 61300-3-1: Covers visual examination methods applicable prior to attenuation testing.
