IEC 61300-3-46:2025 provides a standard for the measurement of guide pin bore and fibre bore diameters for rectangular ferrules used in connectors specified in the IEC 61754 series. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2011. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition of fibre bore measurement; b) addition of force gauge method; c) addition of Annex A on temperature dependence.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-3-46:2025 is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifies basic test and measurement procedures for assessing the bore diameter in rectangular ferrules used in fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This standard is essential for ensuring precision and reliability in optical connector assemblies defined within the IEC 61754 series.
This second edition updates the 2011 version by including significant technical revisions such as the addition of fibre bore measurement, a force gauge method, and a temperature dependence annex. Such enhancements improve accuracy and repeatability in measuring guide pin and fibre bore diameters, which are critical parameters for optimal optical fiber alignment and connector performance.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
IEC 61300-3-46:2025 defines standardized methods for measuring the diameter of guide pin bores and fibre bores in rectangular ferrules. Accurate measurements ensure correct mechanical alignment and minimize insertion forces between connectors. -
Measurement Tools and Apparatus
Measurements are performed using calibrated pin gauge assemblies made from tungsten carbide steel with high surface precision (cylindricity ≤ 100 nm, surface roughness ≤ 20 nm Ra). The pin gauges are selected based on diameter increments of 200 nm or less to cover the relevant specifications. -
Test Conditions
The standard prescribes controlled temperature (18–25 °C) and relative humidity (40–50%) conditions for calibration and testing. The applicable test forces differ between guide pin bores (0.981 N ± 0.010 N) and fibre bores (0.490 N ± 0.005 N), ensuring consistent and reliable results. -
Measurement Methods
IEC 61300-3-46:2025 introduces two main measurement methods:- Method A: Using a mass element attached to the pin gauge assembly to apply gravity force
- Method B: Using a force gauge to pull the pin gauge assembly directly
-
Temperature Dependence
Annex A provides guidelines to convert bore diameter measurements across different temperatures, addressing material expansion or contraction that could affect connector performance. -
Procedure Outline
- Precondition the ferrule and pin gauge under specified environmental conditions for at least 24 hours.
- Select a pin gauge smaller than the expected bore diameter.
- Insert the pin gauge into the ferrule bore from the recommended rear entry.
- Apply the designated force using either a mass element or force gauge.
- Increase pin gauge diameter incrementally until the pin gauge cannot be pulled out under test force.
- Record the diameter of the last successfully pulled pin gauge as the bore diameter.
- Repeat for all guide pin bores and fibre bores.
Applications
IEC 61300-3-46:2025 is crucial for manufacturers and quality control laboratories involved in the production and testing of fibre optic connectors, particularly connectors with rectangular ferrules specified within the IEC 61754 series. Key applications include:
-
Quality Assurance
Verifying bore diameter tolerances to ensure proper fit and alignment of guide pins and optical fibres, which directly impact connector insertion loss and repeatability. -
Connector Design and Development
Assisting engineers in validating ferrule designs by providing repeatable, traceable measurement protocols for bore dimensions. -
Manufacturing Process Control
Enabling production line testing to maintain tight diameter specifications and reduce connector failures or performance degradation. -
Research and Standardization
Serving as a reference methodology for ongoing developments in fibre optic interconnects and passive components.
