IEC 61300-3-51:2014 is intended to describe the procedure required to measure the pin gauge withdrawal force for rectangular ferrule multi-fibre connectors. This measurement can be used as an alternative to the measurement of the pin gauge insertion force, both of which evaluate the fit of the pin gauge(s) into the guide pin hole(s) of the female-type connector. The experimental verification of interchangeability between them is shown in Annex A. For the male-type connector, IEC 61300-3-49 is applied to evaluate how securely the guide pins are retained in the guide holes. Keywords: pin gauge withdrawal force, pin gauge insertion force
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61300-3-51:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifies basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, focusing specifically on the pin gauge withdrawal force testing for rectangular ferrule multi-fibre connectors. This measurement technique assesses the fit quality of pin gauges inserted into the guide pin holes of female-type connectors, providing an alternative to pin gauge insertion force measurements. The standard ensures reliable and consistent testing methods to verify the mechanical interaction and tolerance compatibility of multi-fibre rectangular ferrule connectors.
Key Topics
- Pin Gauge Withdrawal Force Measurement: Defines the procedure to measure the force required to withdraw a pin gauge from the guide pin hole in a female-type connector. This parameter reflects the mechanical fit and retention of the pin gauge.
- Test Procedures: Two methods are described for carrying out these measurements:
- Method A: Using calibrated weights to exert the withdrawal force.
- Method B: Using a tensile testing machine for precise force measurement.
- Interchangeability with Insertion Force: The standard includes experimental verification that pin gauge withdrawal force measurements can serve as an alternative to pin gauge insertion force tests, offering flexibility in quality assessment.
- Test Apparatus: Detailed description of fixtures, pin gauges, plug gauges, and measurement devices necessary to perform accurate withdrawal force testing.
- Standardized Conditions: Ensures testing consistency by outlining test conditions such as temperature, humidity, and equipment calibration.
- Scope of Application: Focus on rectangular ferrule multi-fibre connectors, commonly used in high-density fibre optic networks.
Applications
IEC 61300-3-51:2014 is indispensable for manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance engineers working with fibre optic multi-fibre rectangular ferrule connectors. Its applications include:
- Quality Control: Ensuring guide pin holes in female-type connectors meet strict mechanical fit requirements, reducing the risk of poor mating and connection failures.
- Connector Interchangeability Testing: Validating whether connectors meet required mechanical tolerances for widespread interoperability across different manufacturers.
- Product Development: Assisting designers in optimizing connector mechanical interfaces for better durability and ease of assembly.
- Compliance with Industry Standards: Supporting adherence to IEC 61300 series standards which govern fibre optic interconnecting devices to ensure compatibility and performance.
- Maintenance and Inspection: Providing guidelines for periodic examination and measurement of connector performance in installed fibre optic systems.
Related Standards
IEC 61300-3-51:2014 is part of the IEC 61300 series, which includes various test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices. Key related standards include:
- IEC 61300-3-1: Visual examination procedures for fibre optic components.
- IEC 61300-3-49: Test methods related to the retention force of guide pins in male-type connectors.
- IEC 61754 series: Defines fibre optic connector interface standards including types MT, MPO, Mini-MPO, and MT-RJ which the pin gauge procedures apply to.
- ISO/IEC directives: Provides guidelines on standard development and application for electrotechnical components testing.
By adhering to IEC 61300-3-51, companies ensure rigorous, standardized testing that supports the mechanical reliability and interoperability of multi-fibre rectangular ferrule connectors in critical fibre optic communication infrastructure.
