IEC 61326-2-1:2012 specifies more detailed test configurations, operational conditions and performance criteria for equipment with test and measurement circuits (both internal and/or external to the equipment) that are not EMC protected for operational and/or functional reasons, as specified by the manufacturer. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The main technical changes are: Update with respect to IEC 61326-1:2012. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61326-1:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61326-2-1:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements specifically tailored for electrical equipment used in measurement, control, and laboratory applications. This part 2-1 sets out particular requirements including detailed test configurations, operational conditions, and performance criteria for sensitive test and measurement equipment that are intentionally not EMC protected in certain operational scenarios. This second edition replaces the 2005 edition and updates requirements aligned with IEC 61326-1:2012.
It is critical for manufacturers, testers, and compliance experts working with advanced laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers, to apply these requirements to ensure reliable operation without interference in EMC-unprotected environments.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
IEC 61326-2-1 expands on the general EMC requirements in IEC 61326-1 by focusing on equipment with test and measurement circuits that may be exposed to electromagnetic disturbances for operational reasons and thus not inherently protected by EMC design. -
Test Configurations and Setup
The standard mandates specific configurations for Equipment Under Test (EUT) during EMC testing. For example, input/output (I/O) ports employed for test purposes must be capped or terminated unless applying an input signal is necessary to evaluate performance accurately. -
Operational Conditions During EMC Testing
Manufacturers are required to define operating modes relevant to the equipment’s functional use. For instance:- Oscilloscopes must be set for maximum sweep speed and sensitivity.
- Logic analyzers should be tested in continuous acquisition modes.
- Digital multimeters (DMMs) typically apply peak detect and auto-range sensitivity modes. This ensures assessment under worst-case or typical use scenarios.
-
Functional Performance Criteria
The standard specifies performance criteria for immunity and emissions based on IEC 61326-1 but includes adjustments for the particular sensitivities of unprotected measurement equipment. -
Immunity and Emission Requirements
Detailed immunity tests simulate transient, radio-frequency, and electrostatic disturbances while emission limits aim to control electromagnetic interference to other devices, maintaining reliable operation in sensitive applications. -
Test Reporting and Documentation
Clear guidelines for documenting test procedures, EMC test plans, environmental conditions, functional performance specifications, and results are provided to support certification and regulatory compliance.
Applications
IEC 61326-2-1:2012 applies primarily to sensitive laboratory and test equipment used in environments where electromagnetic protection may be limited due to design or operational constraints. Common applications include:
- Oscilloscopes and Logic Analyzers: Used extensively in electronics diagnostics, repair, and development, requiring precise measurement without susceptibility to external interference.
- Spectrum and Network Analyzers: Critical for RF and wireless system testing where EMC compliance impacts data accuracy.
- Digital Multimeters and Analog Instruments: Fundamental tools in laboratories and industry that must perform consistently despite a potential EMC-unprotected environment.
- Board Test Systems and Specialized Measurement Devices: Custom or high-precision equipment where operational access or signal integrity necessitates minimal EMC filtering.
By conforming to this standard, manufacturers ensure their sensitive measurement devices function reliably, minimizing errors and downtime caused by electromagnetic disturbances.
