IEC 61340-4-6:2025 provides electrical and mechanical test methods and performance limits for the evaluation, acceptance, and periodic verification testing of wrist straps. This document is intended for testing wrist straps and wrist strap systems used for the grounding of personnel engaged in working with ESD sensitive assemblies and devices. It does not address constant monitoring systems. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) editorial comments made during the review of the second edition were reviewed and incorporated where appropriate; b) normative references have been added to address the safety of equipment.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61340-4-6:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies electrical and mechanical test methods and performance limits for wrist straps and wrist strap systems. These devices are critical components in electrostatic discharge (ESD) control programs, used to prevent damage to sensitive electronic assemblies and components by ensuring proper grounding of personnel. This standard provides guidelines for the evaluation, acceptance, and periodic verification testing of wrist straps, ensuring they consistently provide reliable protection against static electricity. The 2025 edition introduces editorial improvements and updated normative references to address equipment safety.
Keywords: IEC 61340-4-6:2025, wrist straps, ESD, test methods, electrostatics, grounding systems, periodic verification, standard compliance.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Standard
- Defines procedures for electrical and mechanical testing of wrist straps and wrist strap systems.
- Applies to products intended for grounding personnel when working with ESD-sensitive devices.
- Excludes requirements and tests for constant monitoring systems.
-
Types of Testing
- Evaluation Testing: Laboratory tests to determine performance capabilities (e.g., continuity, resistance).
- Acceptance Testing: Inspections to confirm proper marking, manufacturer identification, and electrical functionality upon receipt.
- Periodic Compliance Verification Testing: Regular, user-defined checks to ensure ongoing functionality, focusing on system continuity resistance.
-
Performance Limits
- Specifies maximum and minimum resistance values for continuity (e.g., wrist strap resistance under 5 MΩ for evaluation and acceptance; system continuity under 35 MΩ for periodic checks, unless otherwise defined for safety).
- Details mechanical requirements, including breakaway force, ground cord strength, flex life, and size adaptability.
-
Test Methodologies
- Instructions for test setups (fixtures, ohmmeters), procedures for measuring resistance and continuity, and mechanical properties such as breakaway force and durability (bending life).
- Emphasizes recording ambient testing conditions (temperature, humidity).
-
Marking and Identification
- Requires clear manufacturer identification and marking of non-standard current-limiting resistance values.
-
Safety Considerations
- Adherence to IEC 61010-1 and IEC 61010-2-030 for safety in electrical measurement environments.
- Warnings regarding potential hazards from test voltages and recommendations on safe testing practices.
Applications
IEC 61340-4-6:2025 is essential for organizations involved in the production, assembly, and maintenance of electronic devices susceptible to electrostatic discharge. Practical applications include:
- Electronics Manufacturing: Ensuring worker wrist straps meet electrical safety and mechanical durability requirements, reducing ESD-related failures in sensitive components.
- Quality Assurance: Routine in-house testing of wrist straps helps comply with industry ESD control policies and audit requirements.
- Procurement: Acceptance testing guidelines facilitate reliable sourcing of wrist straps from manufacturers, verifying product claims and marking.
- ESD Program Compliance: Enables organizations to implement structured, periodic performance checks and maintain records for auditing and certification.
- Workplace Safety: Specifications for breakaway forces and resistance values deliver added safety for personnel working around live circuits and sensitive devices.
By applying IEC 61340-4-6:2025, facilities can reliably minimize ESD risks, especially in high-reliability electronics sectors such as semiconductors, telecommunications, aerospace, and medical devices.
Related Standards
