IEC 61347-2-9:2012 series specifies particular safety requirements for electromagnetic controlgear for discharge lamps such as high-pressure mercury vapour, low-pressure sodium vapour, high-pressure sodium vapour and metal halide lamps. The standard covers inductive-type electromagnetic controlgear for use on a.c. supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz, associated with discharge lamps, having rated wattages, dimensions and characteristics as specified in IEC 60188, IEC 60192 and IEC 60662. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2000, Amendment 1:2003 and Amendment 2:2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the addition of a new Clause 14; b) the word "ballast" is changed to "electromagnetic controlgear". This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61347-1:2007.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61347-2-9:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines particular safety requirements for electromagnetic controlgear used with discharge lamps, excluding fluorescent lamps. This standard applies specifically to inductive-type electromagnetic controlgear operating on AC supplies up to 1,000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. It is relevant for controlgear associated with high-pressure mercury vapour lamps, low-pressure sodium vapour lamps, high-pressure sodium vapour lamps, and metal halide lamps.
This second edition of the standard replaces the first edition from 2000, along with amendments from 2003 and 2006, incorporating important technical revisions such as the addition of new clause 14 and updating terminology by replacing "ballast" with "electromagnetic controlgear." For comprehensive understanding and application, IEC 61347-2-9 should be used alongside IEC 61347-1:2007, which covers general requirements for lamp controlgear.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements: Detailed specifications ensure safe operation of electromagnetic controlgear for discharge lamps, focusing on thermal protection, moisture resistance, insulation, electric strength, and protection against accidental contact.
- Operating Conditions: The standard covers typical and abnormal operating conditions, including thermal endurance of windings, abnormal temperature limits, and provisions for continuous operation at rated voltage and 110% voltage.
- Testing Procedures: Prescribes tests such as mechanical, electrical, and thermal endurance tests, high-voltage impulse testing, and specific heating tests for electromagnetic controlgear to verify compliance with safety and performance standards.
- Construction and Marking: Stipulates constructional requirements, including creepage distances, clearances, earthing provisions, and markings for clear identification and safety information, enhancing reliable and secure installation.
- Terminology Update: Reflects modern terminology by substituting the term "ballast" with "electromagnetic controlgear" for improved clarity and consistency within the industry.
Applications
IEC 61347-2-9:2012 standard plays a crucial role in the manufacturing, testing, and certification of electromagnetic controlgear components for various discharge lamps used in industrial, commercial, and public lighting. Practical applications include:
- Industrial Lighting: Ensuring safe and reliable operation of high-intensity discharge lamps in factories, warehouses, and outdoor areas.
- Street and Public Lighting: Providing specifications that support durable and efficient electromagnetic controlgear for street lamps and public illumination systems.
- Retail and Commercial Buildings: Assisting manufacturers in designing controlgear that complies with safety norms for lighting solutions in retail stores, malls, and offices.
- Maintenance and Safety Audits: Offering guidance to service professionals and safety inspectors when evaluating lamp controlgear installations for compliance with international safety and functional requirements.
Related Standards
