IEC 61360-1:2017 specifies principles for the definition of the properties and associated attributes and explains the methods for representing verbally defined concepts with appropriate data constructs available from IEC 61360-2. It also specifies principles for establishing a hierarchy of classification from a collection of classes, each of which represents a technical concept in the electrotechnical domain or a domain related to electrotechnology. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - support of advanced constructs such as · conditions and constraints, · blocks, · cardinality, · polymorphism, · generic and restricted enumerations, and · mapping; - extended list of data types; - harmonization with IEC 62656-1; - support of IEC TS 62720 and of coded units; - harmonization of semantic and administrative data among the various information objects; - use of UML for data modelling; - enhanced definitions and descriptions; - introduction of examples of higher level constructs such as block, cardinality, or polymorphism as guidance for the user of the IEC 61360 series. IEC 61360-4, IEC reference collection of standard data element types and component classes, can be accessed from IEC CDD (Common Data Dictionary) Free access to Database. The database contains the IEC reference collection of classes and associated characteristic properties (data element types or DETs) of electric/electronic components including materials, geometry and features used in electrotechnical equipment and systems. The dictionary and database follow the methodology of Part 1 of IEC 61360 and the information model of Part 2. IEC 61360-1:2017 has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
Abstract
IEC 61360-1:2017 Overview
IEC 61360-1:2017 is a critical international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that establishes standard data element types with an associated classification scheme. This standard is the first part of the series, focused on definitions, principles, and methods essential for consistent data modelling in electrotechnical and related domains.
As a horizontal standard, IEC 61360-1:2017 provides the foundational principles for defining properties and attributes representing technical concepts. It enables the clear representation of verbally defined concepts using structured data constructs that are further detailed in IEC 61360-2. This fourth edition presents notable technical revisions including enhanced support for advanced data constructs and harmonization with supplementary IEC standards.
Key Topics in IEC 61360-1:2017
-
Principles for Property Definition
IEC 61360-1 sets the framework for precisely defining the properties of data elements and their associated attributes, ensuring clear communication and interoperability in data exchange. -
Advanced Data Constructs
The 2017 edition introduces support for sophisticated constructs such as:- Conditions and constraints to refine property applicability
- Blocks and cardinality for structuring data groups
- Polymorphism, enabling flexible object typing
- Generic and restricted enumerations for controlled vocabularies
- Mapping for linking related concepts
-
Data Types and Hierarchies
An extended list of supported data types is defined, along with principles for establishing a classification hierarchy of component classes, each representing specific electrotechnical concepts. -
Harmonization and Modelling
The standard aligns with IEC 62656-1 and supports IEC TS 62720, incorporating coded units and semantic harmonization, enhancing consistency across information objects. It additionally utilizes UML (Unified Modeling Language) for data modelling to offer clear visual and technical representations. -
Supporting Documentation and Examples
IEC 61360-1 includes enhanced definitions, descriptions, and practical examples illustrating complex constructs such as blocks, cardinality, and polymorphism, which guide users in implementing the standard correctly.
Applications
-
Electrotechnical Component Classification
The standard underpins the classification and description of electrical and electronic components, covering materials, geometry, features, and more, aiding manufacturers and suppliers in data standardization. -
Product Data Management (PDM) and Digital Twins
By providing a unified classification scheme and property definitions, IEC 61360-1 supports accurate product descriptions critical for PDM systems and digital twin applications. -
Interoperable Information Exchange
Enables consistent property definition and data typing across various IT systems, simplifying data sharing in supply chains, engineering design, and maintenance operations. -
Reference Data Dictionary Integration
IEC 61360-1 principles support the development and use of the IEC Common Data Dictionary (IEC CDD) available freely as a database. This resource standardizes classes and data elements for electrotechnical products globally.
