IEC 61543:2022 provides specific emission and immunity requirements, tests and performance criteria for residual current-operated protective devices (RCDs), for household and similar use, for rated voltages not exceeding 440 V. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1995, Amendment 1:2004 and Amendment 2:2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant changes with respect to the previous edition: some editorial modifications were introduced to comply to the ISO/IEC Directives Part 2:2021, e.g. introduction of Clause 3 – Terms and Definitions and renumbering of the whole document. In particular, the numbering of performance criteria has been changed (5.1.1, 5.1.2 become A, B, etc.); some technical improvements: Modification of scope and addition of Clause 6 and Clause 7 to enable the use of this document as a guideline for the preparation of EMC requirements and tests for other product standards under the scope of SC 23E; Requirements for voltage dips and interruptions added; Repetition rate for burst-test, defined at 5 kHz; Surge test: Specifying impulse voltage application point and adding of voltages 2 kV, 1 kV and 0,5 kV to test T 5b; Radiated radio-frequency electromagnetic field: Adding of frequency range 1,4 GHz to 6 GHz and specifying frequencies for the test at 1,25 IΔn; Conducted, common mode disturbances in the frequency range 0 Hz to 150 kHz: Specifying frequencies for the test at 1,25 IΔn; Electrostatic discharges: Change of performance criteria from 5.1.3 to B.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61543:2022 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for residual current-operated protective devices (RCDs) used in household and similar applications. It applies to RCDs with rated voltages not exceeding 440 V and serves as a technical revision of the original 1995 edition, incorporating significant updates to reflect modern EMC testing and performance criteria.
The standard establishes specific emission and immunity tests to ensure that RCDs operate reliably without interference from electromagnetic disturbances commonly encountered in residential, commercial, and light-industrial environments. IEC 61543:2022 is intended to be referenced by product standards for RCDs and offers guidelines for preparing EMC requirements for other related electrical devices under the IEC Subcommittee 23E scope.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
Covers electromagnetic compatibility of RCDs for household and similar use, including:- RCCBs (Residual current operated circuit-breakers without overcurrent protection)
- RCBOs (with integral overcurrent protection)
- Socket-outlet RCDs (SRCDs)
- Portable RCDs (PRCDs)
- Device families meeting general RCD safety requirements (IEC 60755)
-
Emission and Immunity Requirements
Defines emission limits and immunity test procedures relevant to RCDs:- Voltage dips and interruptions
- Conducted disturbances induced by radio-frequency fields
- Fast transient/burst immunity (with a 5 kHz repetition rate)
- Surge immunity including impulse voltage specifications at 0.5 kV, 1 kV and 2 kV
- Radiated radio-frequency electromagnetic field immunity across 1.4 GHz to 6 GHz range
- Conducted common mode disturbances from 0 Hz to 150 kHz frequency range
- Electrostatic discharge immunity with updated performance criteria
-
Performance Criteria and Testing
Updates include revised clause structure and renumbering of performance criteria from numeric to alphabetical codes for clearer classification (e.g., A, B). The document incorporates:- General test circuit examples
- Specific test levels and frequencies for immunity testing
- Guidelines for threshold current levels related to RCD sensitivity (1.25 times IΔn)
-
Guidance for Other Household Electrical Devices
The standard extends beyond RCDs and provides generic guidelines for EMC requirements and tests for other products within the IEC Subcommittee 23E portfolio such as residual current monitors, arc fault detection devices, automatic reclosing devices, power frequency overvoltage protective devices, and residual direct current detecting devices for electric vehicle charging.
Applications
IEC 61543:2022 plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and electromagnetic compatibility of RCDs and related protective devices in residential and similar electrical installations. Key applications include:
-
Safety in Electrical Installations
RCDs operate effectively to protect users against electrical shock and fire hazards by reliably detecting residual current faults even in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances. -
Manufacturing and Product Development
Manufacturers utilize IEC 61543 as a benchmark for product design, EMC testing, and certification processes to comply with international safety and EMC regulations. -
Standardization of EMC Testing
Testing laboratories and certification bodies use this standard to perform consistent and standardized EMC tests, ensuring that protective devices meet stringent immunity and emission requirements. -
Guidance for Emerging Technologies
The document informs the development of EMC requirements for new household electrical accessories and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, supporting evolving market needs and technological advancements.
