This part of IEC 61557 specifies the requirements applicable to equipment for measuring the loop impedance between a phase conductor and the protective conductor or between a phase conductor and neutral or between two phase conductors by using the voltage drop when the circuit under test is loaded. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1997. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The following changes were made with respect to the previous edition: a) definitions complemented; b) revision of some requirements; c) addition of information on operating instructions; d) addition of new influence quantities E9 and E10.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61557-3:2007 is an international standard focused on electrical safety in low voltage distribution systems up to 1,000 V alternating current (a.c.) and 1,500 V direct current (d.c.). This part of the IEC 61557 series specifically addresses equipment used for testing, measuring, or monitoring protective measures related to loop impedance. Loop impedance testing is crucial for verifying the effectiveness of protective earth systems and ensuring overall safety in electrical installations.
This second edition updates and replaces the 1997 version, incorporating significant technical revisions including enhanced definitions, revised requirements, added operating instruction guidelines, and new influence quantities. IEC 61557-3 supports the global harmonization of electrical safety practices, facilitating consistent and reliable measurement of loop impedance for maintenance and compliance verification purposes.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
The standard applies to equipment that measures loop impedance - the impedance of the circuit between phase conductor and protective conductor, phase and neutral, or between two phases - by assessing the voltage drop under load conditions in low voltage networks. -
Terms and Definitions
Updated and clarified definitions related to loop impedance and measurement parameters ensure a common understanding and accurate communication among users and manufacturers. -
Equipment Requirements
Detailed technical and performance requirements for loop impedance measuring devices enhance accuracy, stability, and safety. These include precision thresholds, operational conditions, and environmental influences. -
Operating Instructions and Marking
The standard mandates comprehensive operating instructions, highlighting correct usage, interpretation of results, safety warnings, and equipment calibration details. Clear markings on the equipment facilitate proper identification and compliance. -
Influence Quantities
New influence quantities (E9 and E10) have been included to address factors affecting measurement reliability, reflecting advances in testing methodologies and environmental considerations. -
Testing and Uncertainty Calculation
Rigorous testing protocols define how manufacturers and users should verify equipment conformity. Procedures for calculating measurement uncertainty help ensure dependable and reproducible loop impedance readings.
