IEC 61587-1:2011 specifies environmental requirements, test set-up, as well as safety aspects for empty enclosures, i.e. cabinets, racks, subracks and chassis under indoor conditions. The purpose of this standard is to establish defined levels of physical performance in order to meet certain requirements of storage, transport and final location conditions. It applies in whole or part only to the mechanical structures of cabinets, racks, subracks and chassis, but it does not apply to electronic equipment. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2007. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Rephrasing "performance level" by "classification"; - Reference to fire hazard testing according to IEC 60695-11-10 in 8.2.1; - Intended applications replaced by application examples; - Static load test, distributed dummy load locations for ETSI and 19" removed; - Table "Static load distribution within the cabinet" IEC 60297-2 changed to IEC 60297-3-100; - IEC 60917 subrack 625 mm wide has been removed, as it is not a common width; - Parts of the document relevant to outdoors have been removed (reference to 61969 series).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61587-1:2011 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies environmental requirements, test set-ups, and safety aspects for mechanical structures such as cabinets, racks, subracks, and chassis used indoors. This part 1 of the series focuses exclusively on empty enclosures for electronic equipment, establishing defined physical performance classifications to ensure durability through storage, transportation, and final installation under indoor environments.
Key features of IEC 61587-1:2011 include:
- Scope limited to mechanical structures, excluding electronic components.
- Emphasis on test procedures simulating environmental and mechanical stresses.
- Reclassification terminology updated from “performance level” to “classification.”
- Inclusion of fire hazard testing aligned with IEC 60695-11-10 standards.
- Removal of outdoor-related provisions and uncommon subrack widths.
- Alignment with related IEC test standards such as IEC 60068 series.
This third edition supersedes the 2007 version, incorporating technical revisions to enhance practical applicability for manufacturers, testers, and facility planners.
Key Topics
Environmental Requirements & Testing Setup
IEC 61587-1 defines environmental classifications covering cold, dry heat, damp heat, industrial atmosphere, and corrosion resistance. Test setups are standardized for indoor conditions to validate:
- Cold and heat resistance (cyclic tests reflecting realistic temperature changes)
- Resistance to industrial pollutants including salt mist and sulfur compounds
- Vibration, shock, and mechanical impact endurance
Mechanical Load Testing
The standard outlines detailed procedures for static and dynamic mechanical load tests targeting:
- Subracks: Static load tests simulate insertion forces and sustained loading; vibration and shock tests ensure structural integrity during handling.
- Cabinets and racks: Lifting tests, stiffness measurements, and impact tests replicate installation and transportation stresses.
Safety Aspects
Safety evaluations focus on:
- Earth bonding: Ensuring effective grounding to prevent electrical hazards.
- Flammability: Compliance with fire safety requirements to mitigate fire risk.
- Degrees of Protection (IP Code): Applying IEC 60529 tests to verify enclosure resistance against dust and water ingress, crucial for maintaining internal equipment safety.
Classification System
Replacing “performance level,” the new classification system provides a clear framework to categorize mechanical structures based on test results aligned with IEC 60297 (19-inch series) and IEC 60917 standards. This ensures interoperability and consistency across suppliers and users.
Applications
IEC 61587-1:2011 is essential for organizations involved with:
- Design and manufacturing of indoor electronic equipment enclosures, ensuring compliance with mechanical and environmental durability standards.
- Quality assurance and testing laboratories conducting environmental and mechanical tests on racks, subracks, cabinets, and chassis.
- Data centers and network infrastructure planners specifying equipment racks and cabinets that must withstand typical transport and indoor operational conditions.
- Procurement specialists requiring verification that mechanical structures meet international norms for safety and environmental endurance.
This standard helps reduce equipment downtime by validating enclosure robustness under typical indoor stressors, thus improving reliability and lifespan.
Related Standards
IEC 61587-1 works in conjunction with several important IEC and ISO standards, including:
- IEC 60068 series – Environmental testing methods such as cold, heat, vibration, shock, and corrosive atmosphere tests relevant to electrical equipment.
- IEC 60297 series – Mechanical dimensions and framework specifications for 19-inch racks and subracks.
- IEC 60917 series – Standardized dimensions and mechanical requirements for subracks.
- IEC 60695-11-10 – Fire hazard testing methods applied in verifying flammability of enclosure materials.
- IEC 60529 – IP Code defining degrees of protection against solids and liquids ingress.
- IEC 60512-1-1 – General connector testing methods relevant when assessing mechanical integrity of enclosures with electronic interface components.
By integrating these standards, IEC 61587-1:2011 provides a comprehensive mechanical and environmental testing framework for indoor electronic equipment structures.
