IEC 61643-311:2013 is applicable to gas discharge tubes (GDT) used for overvoltage protection in telecommunications, signalling and low-voltage power distribution networks with nominal system voltages up to 1 000 V (r.m.s.) a.c. and 1 500 V d.c..They are defined as a gap, or several gaps with two or three metal electrodes hermetically sealed so that gas mixture and pressure are under control. They are designed to protect apparatus or personnel, or both, from high transient voltages. This standard contains a series of test criteria, test methods and test circuits for determining the electrical characteristics of GDTs having two or three electrodes. This standard does not specify requirements applicable to complete surge protective devices, nor does it specify total requirements for GDTs employed within electronic devices, where precise coordination between GDT performance and surge protective device withstand capability is highly critical. This second edition of IEC 61643-311 cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2001. It constitutes a technical revision. Specific changes with respect to the previous edition are: Addition of performance values. Key words: gas discharge tubes (GDT), overvoltage protection in telecommunications, signalling and low-voltage power distribution networks, nominal system voltages up to 1 000 V (r.m.s.) a.c. and 1 500 V d.c.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61643-311:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies performance requirements and test circuits for gas discharge tubes (GDTs). These components are integral to low-voltage surge protective devices designed for overvoltage protection in telecommunications, signaling, and low-voltage power distribution networks. The standard applies to GDTs used with nominal system voltages up to 1000 V (r.m.s.) AC and 1500 V DC.
Gas discharge tubes are critical protective components featuring two or three metal electrodes sealed within a controlled gas environment. They function by safely diverting high transient voltages, thereby protecting sensitive apparatus and personnel from electrical surges. IEC 61643-311:2013 provides detailed test methods and electrical performance criteria to ensure reliable GDT function in surge protection applications.
This second edition replaces the previous 2001 version, introducing additional performance values to reflect advanced requirements in surge protective device design.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Focuses on GDTs used in telecom, signalling, and power networks with nominal voltages up to 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC.
- Performance Requirements: Establishes criteria such as sparkover voltage, insulation resistance, capacitance, transverse voltage, and DC holdover voltage.
- Test Circuits: Defines standardized circuits and measurement procedures for evaluating GDT parameters, including:
- DC sparkover voltage test
- Impulse sparkover voltage test
- Glow-to-arc transition current, glow voltage, and arc voltage tests
- Current carrying capacity assessments (alternating and impulse discharge currents)
- Fail-short (failsafe) testing
- Mechanical Requirements: Covers robustness of terminations, solderability, radiation effects, and marking requirements.
- Service Conditions: Accounts for effects of low temperature, altitude, ambient conditions, and relative humidity on GDT performance.
- Reliability Metrics: Addresses failure rates and standard atmospheric test conditions to ensure consistent device quality.
Applications
IEC 61643-311:2013 standardized GDT components are widely used in various critical sectors for overvoltage protection:
- Telecommunications Equipment: Preventing damage caused by transient overvoltages induced by lightning or switching operations.
- Signalling Networks: Ensuring stable and reliable signal transmission by limiting surge voltages that could disrupt communication.
- Low-Voltage Power Distribution: Protecting control devices, instrumentation, and end-user equipment operating at low voltages.
- Surge Protective Devices (SPDs): Serving as key components within SPDs that require reliable and predictable overvoltage mitigation.
- Safety Systems: Shielding personnel and sensitive apparatus in environments prone to transient electrical surges.
By conforming to IEC 61643-311, manufacturers and engineers can ensure GDTs meet stringent requirements for electrical performance and reliability, enabling safer and more resilient power and communication systems.
