IEC 61672-1:2013 gives electroacoustical performance specifications for three kinds of sound measuring instruments: - time-weighting sound level meters that measure exponential-time-weighted, frequency-weighted sound levels; - integrating-averaging sound level meters that measure time-averaged, frequency-weighted sound levels; and - integrating sound level meters that measure frequency-weighted sound exposure levels. Sound level meters specified in this standard are intended to measure sounds generally in the range of human hearing. Two performance categories, class 1 and class 2, are specified in this standard. Acceptance limits for class 2 are greater than, or equal to, those for class 1. This standard is applicable to a range of designs for sound level meters. A sound level meter may be a self-contained hand-held instrument with an attached microphone and a built-in display device. A sound level meter may be comprised of separate components in one or more enclosures and may be capable of displaying a variety of acoustical signal levels. Sound level meters may include extensive analogue or digital signal processing, separately or in combination, with multiple analogue and digital outputs. Sound level meters may include general-purpose computers, recorders, printers, and other devices that form a necessary part of the complete instrument. Sound level meters may be designed for use with an operator present or for automatic and continuous measurements of sound level without an operator present. Specifications in this standard for the response to sound waves apply without an operator present in the sound field. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2002. It constitutes a technical revision. In this second edition, conformance to specifications is demonstrated when measured deviations from design goals do not exceed the applicable acceptance limits, and when the uncertainty of measurement does not exceed the corresponding maximum-permitted uncertainty, with both uncertainties determined for a coverage probability of 95 %.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61672-1:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the performance requirements for sound level meters used in electroacoustics. This standard defines the technical specifications applicable to three types of sound measuring instruments:
- Time-weighting sound level meters (measuring exponential-time-weighted, frequency-weighted sound levels)
- Integrating-averaging sound level meters (measuring time-averaged, frequency-weighted sound levels)
- Integrating sound level meters (measuring frequency-weighted sound exposure levels)
The standard covers sound level meters designed for general human hearing range and categorizes instruments into Class 1 and Class 2, with Class 1 having stricter performance limits. IEC 61672-1:2013 replaces the 2002 edition and introduces updated conformity criteria for assessing deviations and measurement uncertainty.
Key Topics
IEC 61672-1:2013 provides extensive technical criteria and testing methods, including:
- Performance specifications: Details requirements for accuracy, frequency weightings (A, C, Z), directional response, linearity, self-generated noise, time weightings (Fast and Slow), toneburst response, and saturation indicators.
- Environmental conditions: Defines reference conditions for air temperature, humidity, static pressure, and electromagnetic interference to ensure consistent measurement quality.
- Measurement uncertainty: Specifies maximum-permitted uncertainties to guarantee reliable sound level readings with 95% confidence.
- Calibration and correction procedures: Outlines adjustments at calibration check frequencies and necessary corrections for windscreen attenuation, reflections, and other influences.
- Output and display: Requirements for analogue/digital signal outputs, timing facilities, and overload/under-range indicators.
- Design and operational flexibility: Applies to hand-held as well as modular sound level meters, with or without operator presence. Integration with computers, recorders, and printers is supported.
- Marking and documentation: Specifies labeling and manual instructions necessary for the correct use and testing of sound level meters.
Applications
Sound level meters compliant with IEC 61672-1:2013 are essential tools across diverse fields:
- Environmental noise monitoring: Ensuring compliance with noise regulations in urban planning, construction, and transportation.
- Workplace noise assessment: Protecting worker hearing health by measuring noise exposure to meet occupational safety standards.
- Product testing and quality control: Acoustic performance evaluation of consumer products, machinery, and electronic devices.
- Research and development: Accurate noise measurement and acoustic analysis in laboratories and field studies.
- Legal and forensic acoustics: Providing accepted evidence in noise disputes and regulatory enforcement.
By adhering to the IEC 61672-1 standards, professionals can trust the accuracy, reliability, and repeatability of their sound measurement instruments under varying environmental conditions.
