IEC 61676:2023 specifies the performance requirements of instruments as used in the non-invasive measurement of X-RAY tube voltage up to 150 kV and the relevant compliance tests. This document also describes the method for calibration and gives guidance for estimating the uncertainty in measurements performed under conditions different from those during calibration. Applications for such measurement are found in diagnostic radiology including mammography, computed tomography (CT), dental radiology and radioscopy. This document is not concerned with the safety aspect of such instruments. The requirements for electrical safety applying to them are contained in IEC 61010-1. IEC 61676:2023 cancels and replaces first edition published in 2002, Amendment 1:2008. This edition constitutes a technical revision. It includes an assessment of the combined standard uncertainty for the performance of a hypothetical instrument for the non-invasive measurement of the tube high voltage (in Annex A) which replaces Annex A of the edition 1.1 titled "Recommended performance criteria for the invasive divider". The contents of the corrigendum of January 2024 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61676:2023 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the performance requirements and compliance tests for dosimetric instruments used in the non-invasive measurement of X-ray tube voltage up to 150 kV in diagnostic radiology. This standard is critical for manufacturers, laboratories, and users of medical electrical equipment who need reliable, consistent, and accurate voltage measurements in clinical radiology settings such as mammography, computed tomography (CT), dental radiology, and radioscopy. IEC 61676:2023 also addresses calibration methods and provides guidance on estimating measurement uncertainties under varying conditions.
This edition replaces the previous 2002 edition, including Amendment 1:2008, introducing key technical revisions such as an updated assessment method for combined standard uncertainty and improved performance criteria to reflect current industry needs.
Key Topics
-
Performance Requirements: IEC 61676:2023 specifies detailed limits for intrinsic error, repeatability, long-term stability, and effective measurement ranges that dosimetric instruments must satisfy when measuring the practical peak voltage of X-ray tubes.
- Defines maximum permissible intrinsic error: ±2% for voltages above 50 kV and ±1 kV for voltages below 50 kV.
- Stipulates clear over- and under-range indications for measurement instruments.
-
Calibration and Measurement Uncertainty: The standard outlines methods for calibration and guides how to estimate measurement uncertainty, particularly when instruments are used in conditions different from those during calibration. Annex A includes an example for assessing combined standard uncertainty for voltage measurements.
-
Testing and Compliance: It describes standardized procedures for performance tests under various influence quantities (e.g., voltage waveform, anode angle, filtration, dose rate, temperature, humidity, and electromagnetic compatibility), ensuring that instrument results remain valid under practical clinical conditions.
-
Terminology and Definitions: IEC 61676:2023 introduces and clarifies key terms such as practical peak voltage (PPV), effective range, influence quantities, intrinsic error, non-invasive measurement, and voltage ripple. Annex B provides in-depth information on the concept and calculation of practical peak voltage, which is vital for consistent cross-platform measurements.
Applications
IEC 61676:2023 is intended for use in a wide range of diagnostic radiology applications, including:
- Mammography: Ensuring accurate X-ray tube voltage measurement is essential for image quality and proper patient dose in breast imaging.
- Computed Tomography (CT): High-precision voltage measurement supports advanced imaging techniques and radiation dose optimization.
- Dental Radiology: Accurate tube voltage monitoring enhances safety and diagnostic efficacy in dental X-ray equipment.
- Radioscopy and Fluoroscopy: Effective voltage measurement is critical for dynamic imaging procedures, influencing both image quality and radiation protection.
Manufacturers of dosimetric instruments, quality assurance professionals in radiology, and clinical engineers rely on IEC 61676:2023 to validate and verify instrument performance, facilitate compliance with international requirements, and support calibration traceability.
