IEC 61753-042-02:2026 contains the minimum initial performance, test and measurement requirements and severities for plug-pigtail style and plug-receptacle style OTDR reflecting devices to meet the requirements of category C-Controlled environments, as specified in Annex A of IEC 61753-1. These devices are utilized for out-of-band OTDR testing of an optical fibre system. Annex B provides information concerning these devices. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 61753-042-2, published in 2014, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 61753‑042‑2: a) harmonization of test requirements with the requirements specified in IEC 61753-1:2018
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61753-042-02:2026 establishes the minimum performance, test, and measurement requirements for plug-pigtail and plug-receptacle style OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) reflecting devices designed for use in controlled environments (Category C). Issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard ensures the reliability and consistency of fibre optic components used for out-of-band OTDR testing in optical fibre systems. It supersedes the previous edition (IEC 61753-042-2:2014), introducing harmonized test requirements in alignment with IEC 61753-1:2018.
OTDR reflecting devices facilitate accurate fibre infrastructure monitoring and maintenance without disrupting live traffic, making them essential for modern optical networks. The performance criteria delineated in this standard cover both initial product quality and resilience under various environmental and mechanical stresses.
Key Topics
- Scope and Definitions: The standard targets plug-pigtail and plug-receptacle style OTDR reflecting devices, specifying terms, relevant wavelength ranges (passband and reflection-band), and sample size requirements for thorough testing.
- Test Procedures and Requirements: Reference IEC 61300 series methods for evaluating performance factors such as:
- Attenuation (Insertion Loss)
- Wavelength Isolation
- Return Loss
- Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL)
- Mechanical and Environmental Stability (including vibration, shock, temperature fluctuations, humidity, and mating durability)
- Performance Criteria: Establishes limits for optical and physical performance, such as maximum allowable insertion loss, return loss grades, and the required reliability after exposure to extreme conditions.
- Sample Size: Defines the minimum number of samples for each style and test type, supporting statistically reliable assessment.
- Test Reporting: Requires comprehensive, documented test results as proof of compliance.
- Device Construction: Highlights common OTDR reflecting device architectures, such as those utilizing chirped Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) filters or Thin Film Filters (TFF).
Applications
IEC 61753-042-02:2026 is critical for organizations and manufacturers involved in the design, deployment, and maintenance of:
- Passive Optical Networks (PON)
- Broadband fibre access systems
- Telecommunications infrastructure
- Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) solutions
Practical uses include:
- Routine and in-service fibre monitoring: OTDR reflecting devices simplify out-of-band testing, allowing operators to locate faults or degradation points without disabling network services.
- Quality assurance in manufacturing: Ensuring compliance with this standard validates devices for use in controlled environments, mitigating the risk of field failures.
- Network upgrades and maintenance: The standard supports lifecycle management of optical networks by specifying resilient device criteria for repeated connection and disconnection cycles, environmental changes, and mechanical stresses.
