IEC 61754-2: 2026 defines the standard interface dimensions for type BFOC/2,5 family of connectors. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1996. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition of Clause 2, Clause 3 and the Bibliography; b) addition of the active device receptacle interface type; c) revision of the ferrule grades to refer to the connector optical interfaces specified in the IEC 61755-3 series; d) revision of the ferrule end face geometry to refer to the connector optical interfaces specified in the IEC 61755‑3 series and IEC 63267‑3 series; e) improvement of the description of the characteristics of the resilient alignment sleeve for adaptor and rigid bore sleeve for active device receptacle; f) harmonisation of the dimensions of reference A for the rigid bore sleeve with other connector interface standards in IEC 61754 series.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61754-2:2026 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the standard interface dimensions for the type BFOC/2,5 fibre optic connector family. This second edition updates and replaces the first edition from 1996, reflecting significant technical revisions aligned with advancements in fibre optic interconnect technology. IEC 61754-2:2026 ensures global compatibility and interoperability for BFOC/2,5 connectors used in fibre optic communication systems. Adhering to these standardized interface dimensions is essential for manufacturers, network planners, and system integrators who require reliable and high-performance optic connections.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines the standard interface dimensions for the BFOC/2,5 connector family, including connector plug, adaptor, and active device receptacle interfaces.
- Interface Compatibility: Ensures connectors from different manufacturers can interoperate, supporting seamless deployment and maintenance.
- Technical Revisions:
- Addition of new clauses for improved reference and understanding.
- Incorporation of the active device receptacle interface type.
- Ferrule grades revised to align with IEC 61755-3 series connector optical interfaces.
- Updated ferrule end face geometry, referencing IEC 61755-3 and IEC 63267-3 series.
- Enhanced descriptions of resilient alignment sleeves (for adaptors) and rigid bore sleeves (for active devices).
- Harmonized dimensional references to align with other IEC 61754 series connector standards.
- Connector Construction: Details a single-position plug with a 2.5 mm nominal diameter ferrule, bayonet coupling nut, and spring-mounted ferrule.
- Terminology: Relies on definitions provided in IEC 61754-1 and other referenced IEC and ISO terminological resources.
Applications
Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components using BFOC/2,5 connectors are widely used in a variety of applications:
- Telecommunications Networks: Ensuring standardized, reliable connections for high-speed data transmission in backbone and access networks.
- Data Centers: Supporting structured cabling and optical cross-connect systems for scalable and efficient data center infrastructure.
- Industrial and Control Systems: Enabling robust and stable fibre optic links in harsh environments, such as industrial automation and monitoring.
- Broadcast and AV Systems: Providing low-loss, secure connections for professional audio-video and broadcast applications.
- Laboratory and Test Equipment: Facilitating repeatable, standardized fibre connections across research and measurement setups.
By complying with IEC 61754-2:2026, organizations benefit from interoperability, reduced installation risk, and support for international supply chains.
