IEC 61755-3-1:2024 defines the dimensional limits of the optical interface that are necessary for single-mode fibre optic connectors with 2,5 mm or 1,25 mm diameter cylindrical zirconia (ZrO2) ferrules to meet the specific requirements for fibre-to-fibre interconnection, as defined in IEC 61755-2-1. Ferrules made from the material specified in this document are suitable for use in all the operating service environments defined in IEC 61753-1. Ferrule dimensions and features are contained in the IEC 61754 series of fibre optic connector interface standards. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) normative references have been added; b) the introduction of an additional optical interface with a different fibre core eccentricity profile. The previous revision of optical interface standard is named "Variant 1: with fibre core axis oriented towards the connector guide key". The additional optical interface is named "Variant 2: with fibre core axis not oriented towards the connector guide key"; c) statements added related to interoperability, where both variants remain intermateable within a given performance grade and backwards compatible to IEC 61755-3-1:2006; d) The addition of Grade B and Grade C interface requirements for both variants; e) The addition of a descriptive statistic for the mean fibre core eccentricity (mean value) to describe the distribution of fibre core eccentricity to ensure interoperability; f) A new informative Annex B to give guidance on the expected attenuation when mated to a reference connector plug; g) A new informative Annex C to give guidance related to the simulation of optical interface attenuation; h) A new informative Annex D to give guidance related to estimation of mean fibre eccentricity limits for finite production batch sizes.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61755-3-1:2024 is a key international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the dimensional and optical interface parameters for single-mode fibre optic connectors. This document focuses on connectors using non-angled cylindrical full zirconia ferrules with diameters of 2.5 mm and 1.25 mm, designed for dispersion unshifted single-mode physically contacting fibres. It defines critical connector parameters to ensure high-performance fibre-to-fibre interconnection and compatibility within the fibre optic communication industry.
The second edition of IEC 61755-3-1 updates the 2006 release with significant technical revisions, including the introduction of two optical interface variants based on fibre core eccentricity profiles, expanded interface grade requirements, and enhanced guidelines on attenuation and fibre core eccentricity statistics. These ferrules made from zirconia material meet the rigorous environmental standards outlined in IEC 61753-1, making them robust for a wide range of operating conditions.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose: Specifies the dimensional limits and optical interface parameters required for single-mode connectors with 2.5 mm and 1.25 mm zirconia ferrules for optimum fibre interconnection.
-
Ferrule Material and Dimensions: Focus on cylindrical full zirconia ferrules, defined to maintain high precision and durability for optical interfaces, compatible with standards in the IEC 61754 series.
-
Two Optical Interface Variants:
- Variant 1: Fibre core axis oriented towards the connector guide key.
- Variant 2: Fibre core axis not oriented towards the connector guide key.
Both variants are designed to be intermateable within performance grades and backward compatible with previous IEC 61755-3-1 editions.
-
Performance Grades and Requirements: Introduction of Grade B and Grade C interface requirements expanding on performance and quality metrics beyond the original Grade A.
-
Fibre Core Eccentricity: Descriptive statistics including mean fibre core eccentricity values support improved quality control and ensure interoperability across production batches.
-
Attenuation Guidance: Informative annexes provide essential insights into expected optical attenuation when connectors mate, and methodologies for simulating and estimating performance parameters.
-
Batch Size Statistical Analysis: Guidance on estimating mean fibre eccentricity limits as a function of batch sizes supports manufacturers in quality assurance and control during production.
Applications
IEC 61755-3-1:2024 applies extensively in industries relying on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, including:
-
Telecommunications Networks: Ensures connector performance for long-haul and metropolitan single-mode fibre optic links.
-
Data Centers and Enterprise Networks: Supports standardization of high-precision connectors critical for maintaining signal integrity in dense fibre environments.
-
Industrial and Harsh Environments: Zirconia ferrules compliant with IEC 61753-1 standards provide resilience in challenging operating conditions such as temperature extremes, vibration, and humidity.
-
Optical Instrumentation and Test Equipment: Standardized connector parameters facilitate interoperability and reliable measurements across equipment from different manufacturers.
-
Fibre Optic Component Manufacturing: Provides manufacturers with clear dimensional and performance guidelines for producing compatible and high-quality zirconia ferrule connectors.
