IEC 61757:2018 is a generic specification covering optical fibres, components and sub-assemblies as they pertain specifically to fibre optic sensing applications. It has been designed to be used as a common working and discussion tool by the vendors of components and subassemblies intended to be integrated in fibre optic sensors, as well as by designers, manufacturers and users of fibre optic sensors independent of any application or installation. The objective of this document is to define, classify and provide the framework for specifying fibre optic sensors, and their specific components and subassemblies. The requirements of this document apply to all related fibre optic sensor standards which belong to IEC 61757 (all parts). Standards of IEC 61757 (all parts) contain requirements specific to sensors for particular quantities subject to measurement, and for a particular style or variant of such a fibre optic sensor. Keywords: fibre optic sensors
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61757:2018, titled "Fibre optic sensors - Generic specification," is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This comprehensive specification addresses optical fibres, components, and sub-assemblies specifically related to fibre optic sensing applications. Designed as a universal framework, IEC 61757:2018 serves vendors, designers, manufacturers, and end-users of fibre optic sensors, facilitating common understanding and standardization across various applications and industries.
This standard provides classification, definitions, testing protocols, quality assurance, and safety guidelines for fibre optic sensors and their components. It forms the foundation for all related sub-parts of IEC 61757, which address sensors for particular measurable quantities and sensor variants.
Key Topics
- Scope and Classification: Defines the types of fibre optic sensors and classifies them by measurand (e.g., temperature, force, strain, electromagnetic quantities) and transduction principles (such as intensity, phase, or polarization modulation).
- Testing Procedures: Standardized tests for mechanical, electrical, optical, climatic, and environmental parameters ensure the reliability and performance of fibre optic sensors and their components.
- Quality Assurance: Includes quality control measures throughout manufacturing, ensuring compliance with the standard and durability under specified operating conditions.
- Safety Guidelines: Covers general personal safety and requirements for sensors intended for use in explosive environments.
- Marking and Documentation: Specifies requirements for clear marking, labelling, packaging, and comprehensive instruction manuals for components and assembled sensors.
- Ordering and Identification: Defines IEC type designation and ordering information to standardize product identification and procurement.
- Examples and Applications: Annex A provides practical examples of fibre optic sensors, including limit sensors, proximity sensors, gyroscopes, temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and electromagnetic field sensors.
Applications
IEC 61757:2018 applies across a wide variety of industries and use cases where fibre optic sensors provide distinct advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, high sensitivity, and capability for distributed sensing:
- Industrial Automation: Position monitoring, flow measurement, vibration and strain detection, improving process control and predictive maintenance.
- Infrastructure and Civil Engineering: Structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, tunnels through strain and displacement sensing.
- Energy Sector: Detection of temperature, pressure, and mechanical stresses in power plants, oil and gas pipelines, and renewable energy installations.
- Medical Devices: Precise sensing in diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, benefiting from the small size and biocompatibility of fibre optic sensors.
- Aerospace and Transportation: Monitoring structural integrity, vibration, and environmental conditions for increased safety and performance.
- Hazardous Environments: Safe sensing in explosive or radioactive surroundings due to fibre optics’ intrinsic safety characteristics.
Related Standards
IEC 61757:2018 serves as the generic core standard underpinning a family of more specific standards focused on particular types of fibre optic sensors and measurement quantities. It aligns with other IEC standards related to optical fibres and sensor testing, including:
