IEC 61784-1-5:2023 defines Communication Profile Family 5 (CPF 5). CPF 5 specifies a set of protocol specific communication profiles (CPs) based on the IEC 61158 series (Type 7) and other standards, to be used in the design of devices involved in communications in factory manufacturing and process control. NOTE All CPs are based on standards or draft standards or International Standards published by the IEC or on standards or International Standards established by other standards bodies or open standards processes. Each CP selects an appropriate consistent and compatible subset of services and protocols from the relevant set that is defined and modelled in the IEC 61158 series. For the selected subset of services and protocols, the profile also describes any possible or necessary constraints in parameter values.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61784-1-5:2023 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on industrial networks, specifically fieldbus communication profiles. This part of IEC 61784 defines Communication Profile Family 5 (CPF 5), which specifies protocol-specific communication profiles based on the IEC 61158 series (Type 7) and other relevant standards. CPF 5 is intended for the design and implementation of devices facilitating communications in factory manufacturing and process control environments.
The standard ensures the interoperability, consistency, and compatibility of industrial communication protocols by selecting subsets of services and protocols from the IEC 61158 series and defining constraints on parameter values where necessary. It incorporates standards from IEC as well as other international standardization bodies and open standards processes.
Key Topics
Communication Profile Family 5 (CPF 5)
- CPF 5 is based primarily on WorldFIP® technology, a fieldbus communication standard used worldwide.
- The family consists of several communication profiles, notably CP 5/1, CP 5/2, and CP 5/3, each with specific protocol, physical, data-link, and application layer definitions tailored to various industrial communication needs.
Protocol Layers Defined
- Physical Layer (PhL): Specifications cover cable types, connectors, signaling, and electrical characteristics for communication channels.
- Data-Link Layer (DLL): Defines service and protocol selections for reliable data framing, addressing, and error control.
- Application Layer (AL): Covers protocol services, service element (ASE) definitions, message types, and encoding rules to enable effective device communication and data exchange.
Service Selection and Protocol Constraints
- Each profile includes detailed selection of supported services from the IEC 61158 framework to ensure interoperability.
- The standard specifies constraints on parameter values and protocol variables to maintain consistency and simplify implementation.
International Compliance and Intellectual Property
- CPF 5 profiles are developed to align with international standards and maintain compatibility across global industrial networks.
- The standard also addresses intellectual property rights that may apply to certain protocol types, ensuring fair use and compliance.
Applications
IEC 61784-1-5:2023 applies primarily in industrial automation and process control systems where reliable, real-time communication is essential. Typical use cases include:
- Factory Automation: Enabling seamless communication between robotics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and sensors.
- Process Control: Facilitating data exchange in continuous manufacturing environments such as chemical plants, oil refineries, and water treatment facilities.
- Industrial Device Design: Guiding manufacturers of communication modules, network interfaces, and industrial controllers in implementing standardized protocols.
- Interoperability Projects: Assisting system integrators in ensuring multi-vendor device compatibility and robust network design.
- Legacy System Migration: Supporting upgrades or integration of WorldFIP-based networks within broader industrial communication architectures.
Related Standards
- IEC 61158 series: Defines the fieldbus communication protocols and services that CPF 5 profiles are based on.
- IEC 61784-1: The generic part of the Communication Profile Family series, covering common profiles and protocol definitions.
- IEC 61784-2: Provides specifications for real-time Ethernet-based communication profiles.
- IEC 61131 series: Related to programmable controllers and may be implemented alongside CPF 5 communication protocols.
- Industry-specific standards: Depending on application, related standards like ISA-95 or OPC UA may be used in conjunction with IEC 61784 profiles to build comprehensive automation systems.
