IEC 61850-7-4:2010 specifies the information model of devices and functions generally related to common use regarding applications in systems for power utility automation. It also contains the information model of devices and function-related applications in substations. In particular, it specifies the compatible logical node names and data object names for communication between intelligent electronic devices (IED). This includes the relationship between logical nodes and data objects. Major technical changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: - corrections and clarifications according to technical issues raised by the users' community; extensions for new logical nodes for the power quality domain; - extensions for the model for statistical and historical statistical data; - extensions regarding IEC 61850-90-1; - extensions for new logical nodes for monitoring functions according to IEC 62271; - new logical nodes from IEC 61850-7-410 and IEC 61850-7-420 of general interest. This publication is of core relevance for Smart Grid.
Abstract
Overview - IEC 61850-7-4:2010 (Compatible logical node classes and data object classes)
IEC 61850-7-4:2010 is part of the IEC 61850 family for communication networks and systems for power utility automation. It specifies the information model for devices and functions commonly used in substation and power utility automation systems. In particular, the standard defines compatible logical node (LN) names and data object classes that enable consistent data modelling and communication between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). This edition includes corrections, clarifications and multiple extensions (power quality, statistical/historical data, monitoring per IEC 62271, and LNs from IEC 61850-7-410/7-420), making it core to Smart Grid implementations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Information model: standardized definition of logical node classes and associated data objects for device and function representation.
- Compatible logical node names: consistent LN naming and grouping to ensure semantic interoperability across vendors.
- Data object classes: uniform data object names and structures that map to IEC 61850 services and engineering tools.
- Relationships and presence conditions: definition of how LNs and data objects relate and when they must or may be present.
- Extensions and updates: additions for power quality monitoring, statistical/historical data models, and interfaces aligned with IEC 61850‑90‑1 and IEC 62271.
- Namespace and code components: guidance on namespace/versioning and distribution of code components for implementations.
- Normative references and terminology: harmonized terms and definitions to align implementations and testing.
Practical applications
- Enabling interoperability between IEDs from different vendors by standardizing LN and data object semantics.
- Providing the canonical model used in substation automation engineering tools, configuration files, and SCL (Substation Configuration Language) mapping.
- Supporting power quality monitoring, historical/statistical reporting and integration of monitoring functions (e.g., switching, protection supervision).
- Informing firmware and software development for relay manufacturers, RTUs, and gateway devices implementing IEC 61850 data models.
- Facilitating Smart Grid use cases where consistent device models and data exchange are required across distribution, transmission and DER integration.
Who uses this standard
- Utility engineers and system architects designing substation automation and Smart Grid systems.
- IED and protection/control equipment manufacturers implementing IEC 61850 models.
- System integrators, testing labs and consultants performing conformance testing and integration.
- Software vendors of SCADA, historian, and engineering tools mapping data to standardized LNs and data objects.
