IEC 61968-100:2013 specifies an implementation profile for the application of the other parts of IEC 61968 using common integration technologies, including JMS and web services. This International Standard also provides guidance with respect to the use of Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies. This provides a means to derive interoperable implementations of IEC 61968-3 to IEC 61968-9. At the same time, this International Standard can be leveraged beyond information exchanges defined by IEC 61968, such as for the integration of market systems or general enterprise integration.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61968-100:2013 is an International Standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on application integration at electric utilities. Specifically, it defines implementation profiles for system interfaces in distribution management, supporting the integration of various utility applications through widely adopted integration technologies such as Java Message Service (JMS), web services, and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). The standard provides guidance to ensure interoperable implementations of other IEC 61968 parts, particularly Parts 3 to 9, and can also be leveraged for broader enterprise or market system integrations beyond just distribution management.
Key Topics
Integration Technologies
- Describes the use of common integration technologies, including JMS and web services.
- Provides guidance on utilizing ESB architectures for message routing and delivery in heterogeneous application environments.
Support for Multiple Integration Patterns
- Details patterns for request/reply, publish/subscribe, event-driven, asynchronous, and transactional messaging.
- Covers integration both with and without an intermediary layer (such as an ESB), supporting flexible architectures.
Interfaces and Message Organization
- Specifies the design of interfaces using both strongly-typed and generically-typed web services.
- Outlines how to build interface specifications for JMS messaging, including naming conventions and message field organization.
- Defines a common message envelope for consistency in message processing.
Broader Applicability
- While focused on IEC 61968-based information exchanges, the implementation profiles can be adapted for other enterprise integration challenges, such as linking market systems or legacy applications.
- Includes best practices for interoperability between different platforms, programming languages, and operating systems.
Applications
Electric Utility Distribution Management
- Facilitates integration of critical distribution management functions such as outage management, work management, meter reading and control, asset management, and automated mapping.
- Supports the exchange of real-time and batched data between disparate utility applications, including both new and legacy systems.
- Enables utilities to implement scalable and flexible IT architectures that streamline system operations and improve reliability.
Enterprise Integration
- Provides a foundation for integrating utility business systems across departments and with external markets.
- Promotes the use of standard interface definitions and templates for efficient enterprise-wide data interchange.
- Supports utility business process workflows by integrating various information systems over secure, reliable communication channels.
Vendor and Solution Provider Support
- Allows third-party solution providers and vendors to build products that are interoperable with multiple IEC 61968-compliant applications.
- Reduces integration costs and complexity when deploying new or replacement systems within a utility enterprise.
Related Standards
Electric utilities implementing IEC 61968-100 will find it closely linked with the following standards:
- IEC 61968-1: Defines the interface architecture and general recommendations for distribution management.
- IEC 61968-2: Provides a glossary of terms for system interfaces.
- IEC 61968-3 to IEC 61968-9: Specify interfaces for particular utility business functions.
- IEC 61968-11: Offers Common Information Model (CIM) extensions for distribution systems.
- IEC 61970-301 and IEC 61970-552: Address the CIM base and XML model exchange format for broader energy management systems.
- ISO 8601: For date and time representation in data exchanges.
Summary
By leveraging IEC 61968-100:2013 Implementation Profiles, electric utilities can adopt proven integration technologies-such as JMS, web services, and ESB-to establish standardized, interoperable interfaces for distribution management and enterprise integration. This standard supports reliable, secure, and scalable data exchange between diverse systems, ensuring utilities can meet evolving operational and market requirements while maintaining flexibility to adopt future integration technologies.
