IEC 61969-1:2011 contains design guidelines for outdoor enclosures and is applicable over a wide field of mechanical, electromechanical and electronic equipment and its installation where a modular design is used. The objective of this standard is to provide an overview of specifications for enclosures focused on requirements for outdoor applications for stationary use at non-weather protected locations. These enclosures are considered to contain any equipment and provide protection for the outdoor installed facilities against unwanted environmental impacts. The installed equipment may be, but is not limited to, subracks according to IEC 60917-2-2 or IEC 60297-3-101. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition issued in 1999. It constitutes a technical revision. The main technical changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: - Addition of design guidance for thermal management and noise suppression as thermal/noise management is often considered a basic requirement of an empty outdoor enclosure. If thermal management components are included in the product, the environmental impact may become the responsibility of the empty outdoor enclosure manufacturer. Therefore the acoustic limitations shall be observed. Typically, the user of the empty outdoor enclosure follows the local regulatory acoustic requirements (sound power and/or sound pressure). Acoustic measurements may be performed on the empty outdoor enclosure fitted with thermal management components only or, if agreed between manufacturer and user at the final stage of the application specific installation. - Historically, Ed 1 intended to create a market for standardized empty outdoor enclosures offered by multiple vendors. Detail standards such as IEC 61969-2-1 Ed 1 and IEC 61969-2-2 Ed 1 were issued to guide users to preferred and available solutions. However, development showed that this intend (created with user's participation) was not satisfying the user's expectations. Consequently, the detail standards IEC 61969-2-1 Ed 1 and IEC 61969-2-2 Ed 1 will be withdrawn when IEC 61969-2 Ed 2 is issued. The IEC 61969-2 Ed 2 co-ordination dimensions are based on IEC 60917-1. The definition outdoor cases and outdoor cabinets are merged into the definition outdoor enclosures.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61969-1:2011, titled Mechanical structures for electronic equipment – Outdoor enclosures – Part 1: Design guidelines, is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard provides comprehensive design guidelines for outdoor enclosures used to house mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic equipment. It covers enclosures intended for stationary use in non-weather protected outdoor environments. The goal is to ensure that enclosures effectively protect sensitive equipment against environmental hazards and meet regulatory and operational requirements.
The 2011 edition is the second edition and includes significant technical revisions and additions, particularly in thermal management and noise suppression design guidance, reflecting modern needs for outdoor enclosures in electronic applications.
Key Topics
Design Scope and Application
- Applicable to modular mechanical structures for electronic equipment including subracks compliant with IEC 60917-2-2 or IEC 60297-3-101.
- Focus is on enclosures deployed outdoors, typically not benefiting from weather protection such as shelters or buildings.
- Enclosures must protect internal components from environmental impacts such as moisture, dust, mechanical stresses, and electromagnetic interference.
Environmental and Safety Requirements
- Classifies various environmental conditions outdoors, including mechanical loads, seismic events, and electromagnetic shielding.
- Provides guidance on safety aspects conforming to international safety standards to ensure user and equipment protection.
Thermal Management and Noise Suppression
- Includes new design considerations for thermal management as heat dissipation is critical for electronic equipment operating outdoors.
- Addresses acoustic noise control to meet local regulatory requirements on sound power and sound pressure, essential for enclosures with thermal management components like fans or cooling systems.
Modular and Coordination Dimensions
- Discusses the importance of standardized coordination dimensions based on IEC 60917-1 to facilitate modular design and interoperability.
- Reflects consolidation of outdoor cases and cabinets under the concept of outdoor enclosures for standardization efficiency.
Relevant Normative References
The standard references multiple important IEC and ISO documents covering:
- Environmental testing (IEC 60068),
- Safety of information technology equipment (IEC 60950),
- Electromagnetic shielding (IEC 61587-3),
- Protection degrees and mechanical impacts (IEC 60529, IEC 62262),
- Acoustic noise measurement (ISO 7779),
- Lightning protection (IEC 62305-4), and others critical for holistic design and testing of outdoor electronic enclosures.
Applications
- Telecommunications infrastructure: Outdoor cabinets housing network equipment, power supplies, and cabling.
- Industrial automation: Protecting control systems, sensors, and electromechanical devices installed outdoors.
- Public utility facilities: Enclosures for electrical distribution control, monitoring systems, and emergency power.
- Transport and traffic management: Housing electronic controllers, signaling devices, and communication equipment.
- Renewable energy systems: Protecting electrical components in solar, wind, or other outdoor energy installations.
IEC 61969-1 helps manufacturers, system integrators, and facility planners ensure that outdoor enclosures meet performance criteria related to durability, safety, electromagnetic compatibility, thermal regulation, and environmental resistance.
