IEC 61696-2:2011 applies to the design of enclosures for outdoor applications for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations as defined in IEC 61969-1 Ed.2.0. The internal and external coordination dimensions are derived from IEC 60917-2. The internal dimensions meet the mounting dimensions of subracks in accordance with IEC 60917-2-2 and IEC 60297-3. The external dimensions, compared to IEC 60917-2, are partly increased in order to meet the design requirements of the outdoor specific conditions. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition issued in 2000. It constitutes a technical revision. The main technical changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: It was the intention when IEC 61969-2 Ed 1.0 was created that a sectional standard is to be followed by a detail standard, consisting of IEC 61969-2-1 and IEC 61969-2-2. The intention of detail standards was to create a recommended but cost-effective range of outdoor enclosure solutions offered from multiple vendors. However, it became evident that the outdoor enclosure applications were extremely application specific and the intended effect became irrelevant. Consequently, IEC 61969-2-1 and IEC 61969-2-2 became obsolete and will be withdrawn at the time when IEC 61969-2 Ed.2.0 is published. To provide for a useful outdoor enclosure installation matrix IEC 61969-2 Ed.2.0 focuses on overall outdoor enclosure co-ordination dimension only.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61969-2:2011 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on mechanical structures for electronic equipment, specifically outdoor enclosures used for stationary applications at non-weatherprotected locations. This standard defines the coordination dimensions for outdoor enclosures, ensuring consistent interoperability and compatibility with subracks and other electronic mounting equipment.
As part of the broader IEC 61969 series, Part 2 addresses the internal and external coordination dimensions derived from IEC 60917-2. It replaces the first edition from 2000, reflecting technical revisions that emphasize a comprehensive matrix for outdoor enclosure installation instead of multiple detailed sectional standards. This shift responds to the highly application-specific nature of outdoor enclosure solutions.
Key Topics
- Scope and Design: IEC 61969-2 applies to stationary outdoor enclosures designed for harsh, non-weatherprotected environments, providing dimension standards that accommodate such challenging conditions.
- Coordination Dimensions: The standard specifies internal and external dimensions - height (H), width (W), and depth (D) - to ensure compatibility with mounting subracks compliant with IEC 60917-2-2 and IEC 60297-3.
- Dimension Specifications:
- Internal dimensions conform to modular mounting sizes for plug-in units or chassis.
- External dimensions are generally larger than indoor standards to account for additional outdoor environmental protection.
- Aperture sizes and overall dimensions are coordinated with tolerances allowing for functional accessories like locks, handles, and hinges (which may extend beyond enclosure dimensions by up to 25 mm).
- Arrangement Overview: The standard includes guidance on enclosure arrangements, recognizing optional application-specific additions like roofs, bases, and cable management boxes but excluding those from the coordination dimensions.
- Formulae for Optional Dimensions: Enables adaptation of sizes in increments (multiples of 5 mm or 50 mm) to cater to specific installation needs while maintaining coordination rules.
Applications
IEC 61969-2:2011 is essential for designers, manufacturers, and installers of outdoor electronic enclosures used in:
- Telecommunications infrastructure
- Outdoor industrial control equipment
- Power distribution electronics
- Environmental monitoring stations
- Public safety communication systems
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers ensure that their outdoor enclosures fit a variety of subracks and components, enabling easier integration, reduced customization costs, and enhanced protection against outdoor environmental factors. The standard also facilitates multi-vendor offerings compatible within an agreed dimensional framework, improving market interoperability.
Related Standards
This standard links closely to several IEC and international standards, including:
- IEC 61969-1: Mechanical structures for electronic equipment – Outdoor enclosures – Part 1: General requirements, which defines environmental and application conditions for outdoor enclosures.
- IEC 60917-2: Modular order for mechanical structures of electronic equipment, providing the base coordination dimensions for indoor equipment, which IEC 61969-2 adapts for outdoor use.
- IEC 60917-2-2 and IEC 60297-3: Standards covering subrack and mounting dimensions to which IEC 61969-2’s internal dimensions are aligned.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Governs preparation of IEC standards, ensuring consistency and quality.
