This International Standard applies to interfaces between low-voltage switchgear, controlgear, and controllers (e.g. programmable controllers, personal computers, etc.). This standard does not apply to higher level industrial communication networks that have become known as fieldbuses and are considered by IEC subcommittee 65C. The purpose of this standard is to harmonize and define rules, components and requirements of a general nature applicable to industrial CDIs. Those features of the various CDI standards which can be considered as general have therefore been brought together in this part of IEC 62026.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62026-1:2007 titled Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear – Controller-device interfaces (CDIs) – Part 1: General rules is an important International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard aimed at harmonizing the interfaces between low-voltage switchgear, controlgear, and controllers such as programmable controllers or personal computers. Published in 2007, this standard defines general rules, components, and essential requirements that underpin industrial controller-device interfaces (CDIs). It excludes higher-level industrial communication networks commonly known as fieldbuses, which are addressed by a different IEC subcommittee.
IEC 62026-1:2007 establishes a common framework to unify various CDI technologies, enabling easier comparison and selection for diverse industrial automation and control system applications. It serves as a base document within the IEC 62026 series, providing general provisions that are applicable to all specific CDI types covered in subsequent parts.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
IEC 62026-1 addresses interfaces specific to low-voltage switchgear and controlgear linked to controllers. It targets industrial environments involving factory automation and process control systems but explicitly excludes fieldbus network communication. -
Classification and Characteristics
The standard covers classifications of CDI components, interface types, network topologies, and information exchange mechanisms. It details attributes common across CDIs to ensure consistency in hardware and communication behavior. -
Product Information and Marking
Provisions include instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance, CDI component profiles, and marking guidelines to ensure traceability, usability, and correct deployment in industrial settings. -
Environmental and Operational Requirements
The standard defines normal service conditions such as ambient air temperature, altitude, climatic conditions, transport and storage constraints, and mounting. This ensures reliable operation of CDIs in industrial environments. -
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
IEC 62026-1 specifies immunity and emission requirements critical for maintaining effective electromagnetic performance under industrial conditions. It references relevant IEC EMC standards such as IEC 61000 series to ensure robustness of CDIs against disturbances. -
Testing Requirements
General, type, and EMC testing procedures are outlined to verify compliance with the standard’s constructional and performance criteria, guaranteeing dependable interactions between controllers and devices.
Applications
The IEC 62026-1 standard is primarily utilized in the design, manufacturing, and deployment of industrial control systems involving:
- Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear interfacing with controllers in factory automation setups
- Process automation systems requiring standardized and interoperable controller-device communications
- Industrial equipment manufacturers implementing controller-device interfaces to meet global standards
- System integrators and automation engineers selecting appropriate CDI solutions that comply with harmonized rules
- Quality and compliance testing for product certification under international frameworks
Adhering to IEC 62026-1 enables seamless integration and interoperability of control components, aiding in streamlined system design and reduced engineering complexity.
