IEC 62037-2:2021 defines a procedure to measure levels of passive intermodulation generated by a coaxial cable assembly. This test method is applicable to jumper cables, i.e. cable assemblies intended to provide interface flexibility between rigid devices. It is also used to evaluate cable assemblies that are subjected to motion in operation. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2012. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a. criteria for application of mechanical stress revised to be a function of advertised cable bend radius.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62037-2:2021 is an International Standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for the measurement of passive intermodulation (PIM) levels in coaxial cable assemblies used in radio frequency (RF) and microwave applications. This standard defines consistent procedures to verify and evaluate the performance of jumper cables and cable assemblies that provide flexibility between rigid devices or are subjected to motion during operation.
The 2021 edition, along with the subsequent amendment, introduces revised criteria for the application of mechanical stress, now specified as a function of the cable's advertised bend radius. This ensures test accuracy that reflects realistic deployment conditions and cable design specifications.
Key Topics
- Passive Intermodulation (PIM) Measurement: PIM can affect signal quality in RF and microwave systems. The standard details methods for detecting and quantifying PIM generated by the cable assemblies themselves.
- Scope of Applicability: Focuses on jumper cables and similar coaxial assemblies, including multi-channel cables and those used in dynamic or flexible installations.
- Mechanical Stress Testing: Updates the prescribed method to base stress application on the actual bend radius of the cable, ensuring more relevant and reliable test results.
- Test Procedures: Standardizes a step-by-step approach for calibrating equipment, applying mechanical stress, and measuring PIM before, during, and after movement.
- Reporting Requirements: Outlines the necessary parameters and maximum PIM results to include in test reports for traceability and quality assurance.
Applications
IEC 62037-2:2021 has practical value in numerous industries and scenarios where RF integrity is critical:
- Wireless Communication Networks: Used by manufacturers and network providers to ensure cable assemblies meet required PIM performance for base stations, antennas, and distributed antenna systems (DAS).
- Telecommunications Equipment: Helps maintain signal integrity in mobile, fixed, and satellite communication systems by minimizing PIM within coaxial cable links.
- Broadcasting Facilities: Ensures reliable cable connections for television and radio transmission equipment, where low PIM is essential for high-fidelity signals.
- Test Laboratories and Manufacturing Quality Control: Provides a replicable and validated method for designing, verifying, and producing coaxial assemblies to industry standards.
- Field Maintenance and Installation: Guides assessment and troubleshooting for RF cabling subject to repeated movement or reconfiguration.
By providing consistent measurement and reporting methods, IEC 62037-2:2021 supports the delivery of high-performance RF and microwave systems, reduces troubleshooting time, and enhances end-user satisfaction.
Related Standards
For comprehensive management of passive intermodulation in RF and microwave devices, use IEC 62037-2:2021 in conjunction with related standards in the IEC 62037 series:
- IEC 62037-1:2021 – General requirements and measuring methods for PIM in passive RF and microwave devices.
- IEC 62037-3 – Measurement of PIM in coaxial connectors, focusing on test procedures and performance criteria for joints and coupling elements.
- IEC 62037-4 – PIM measurement in coaxial cables, addressing procedures for bulk cable testing prior to connector assembly.
