IEC 62056-6-2:2023 specifies a model of a meter as it is seen through its communication interface(s). Generic building blocks are defined using object-oriented methods, in the form of interface classes to model meters from simple up to very complex functionality. Annexes A to F (informative) provide additional information related to some interface classes This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition of IEC 62056-6-2 published in 2017. It constitutes a technical revision. The significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition are listed in Annex F (Informative).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62056-6-2:2023 is the fourth edition of the international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard is a critical part of the IEC 62056 series, focusing specifically on electricity metering data exchange using the DLMS®/COSEM suite. The standard defines the COSEM (Companion Specification for Energy Metering) interface classes, which model electricity meters through their communication interfaces using object-oriented methods.
The standard serves as a comprehensive framework that supports modeling of meters ranging from simple devices to those with very complex functionalities. It provides generic building blocks-the interface classes-that facilitate standardized communication and interoperability among metering devices. The 2023 edition replaces the 2017 version, introducing a variety of technical updates detailed in Annex F.
Key Topics
-
COSEM Interface Classes: Core to the standard are the interface classes that represent various meter functions as objects. These classes cover parameters, measurement data, access control, management, time and event control, payment metering, and communication setups.
-
Object-Oriented Modeling: The standard employs object-oriented methods to model meters. This approach promotes flexibility, modularity, and scalability in metering device design and data exchange mechanisms.
-
Communication Protocols and Setups: IEC 62056-6-2 details interface classes for setting up meters via local ports, modems, M-Bus, Internet protocols (IPv4, IPv6, TCP/UDP), and Power Line Communication (PLC) technologies including S-FSK and PRIME NB OFDM.
-
Security and Access Control: The standard addresses security aspects such as user identification, COSEM data protection, and security setup to safeguard metering data and prevent unauthorized access.
-
Event and Time Bound Controls: It includes interface classes for clocks, scripts, schedules, activity calendars, and control of events like disconnect and limiter functions.
-
Payment Metering Classes: Specific classes provide support for accounting models involving accounts, credits, charges, and token gateways, enabling integration with prepaid and postpaid metering systems.
Applications
IEC 62056-6-2:2023 has broad practical applications in the smart metering ecosystem and the utility industry, including:
-
Smart Electricity Meters: Implementing standardized communication and data modeling for smart meters that supports remote reading, event management, and control.
-
Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS): Facilitating interoperability between meters and data collection software via standardized interface classes.
-
Utility Automation: Enabling utilities to automate meter reading, billing, demand management, and grid monitoring through consistent data exchange protocols.
-
Prepaid Metering Solutions: Supporting payment metering systems with secure interfaces for credit and token handling.
-
Communication Infrastructure: Ensuring seamless data exchange over diverse media such as PLC networks, Internet, serial ports, and wireless technologies (e.g., ZigBee®).
-
Security and Compliance: Offering robust security mechanisms to comply with regulatory requirements concerning data privacy and integrity in energy metering.
Related Standards
-
IEC 62056 Series: The broader suite includes other parts focusing on application layer, communication profiles, and data exchange methods complementing Part 6-2.
-
DLMS User Association Specifications: Provides detailed protocols and application layer specifications aligned with the COSEM suite.
-
IEC 61334 Series: Related to power line carrier communication utilized in some COSEM interface classes.
-
ISO/IEC 14908 Series: Network communication protocols referenced in COSEM interface classes for specific setups.
-
Protocols for Wireless Communication: Standards such as ZigBee® complement the wireless setup interface classes defined within IEC 62056-6-2.
