IEC 62087-1:2015 specifies the general requirements for the determination of power consumption of audio, video, and related equipment. Requirements for specific types of equipment are specified in additional parts of this series of standards and may supersede the requirements specified in this standard. Moreover, this part of IEC 62087 defines the different modes of operation which are relevant for determining power consumption. This first edition of IEC 62087-1 together with IEC 62087-2 to IEC 62087-6 cancels and replaces IEC 62087:2011 in its entirety. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to Clauses 1 to 5 of IEC 62087:2011. - It includes new information about operation modes. - Equipment that includes removable main batteries are now considered. - Light measuring equipment is now specified.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62087-1:2015 - Audio, video, and related equipment - Determination of power consumption - Part 1: General - defines the general requirements and measurement framework for determining power consumption of audio, video and related equipment. This Part 1 is the common foundation for the IEC 62087 series and sets out operating mode definitions, measurement conditions and general procedures. It applies to equipment powered from an external power source (equipment with non‑removable main batteries is excluded) and introduces updates such as consideration of removable main batteries and specification of light‑measuring equipment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Operating modes: clear definitions for modes relevant to energy measurements - Disconnected, Off, Standby (passive, active low, active high), and On (operation). These mode definitions standardize how power states are described and measured.
- Measurement conditions: general requirements for the power source, environmental conditions, control adjustments, and input signals to ensure repeatable, representative tests.
- Measurement equipment & uncertainty: requirements for power‑measuring instruments and guidance on measurement uncertainty so test results are reliable and comparable.
- Light measurement: specification of luminance and illuminance measuring devices (LMD, lux meters) and procedures for equipment with displays or automatic brightness control (ABC).
- Battery handling: main batteries that are removable must be removed during measurements; auxiliary batteries and their roles are defined.
- Verification procedure: an example verification flow to assess model compliance with declared power consumption values.
- Normative references: links to related measurement standards such as IEC 62301 (standby power) and IEC 62542 (terms/glossary).
Applications and users
Who uses IEC 62087-1:2015 and why:
- Manufacturers and product designers - to measure and report power consumption during product development and to design energy‑efficient audio/video equipment.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform standardized, repeatable power consumption tests for compliance, labeling, and certification.
- Regulators and energy‑efficiency programs - to define test protocols and enforce limits for standby and operating power.
- Procurement teams and eco‑design specialists - to compare models objectively using standardized power metrics.
- R&D and QA engineers - to validate features like automatic brightness control and data‑communication wake modes for their impact on energy use.
