IEC 62153-4-5:2021 is suitable to determine the screening- or the coupling-attenuation of metallic communication cables in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 1 000 MHz (2 400 MHz), depending on the performance of the clamp. It is an alternative method to the triaxial method of IEC 62153-4-4 or IEC 62153-4-9. Due to the undefined outer circuit of this absorbing clamp method, the test results obtained at different places and laboratories could vary by at least ± 6 dB. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a. reorganisation of clauses and annexes; b. extension of frequency range to 2,4 GHz; c. application of a virtual balun respectively balunless test procedure with multiport VNA.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62153-4-5:2021 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test methods for metallic communication cables. This standard focuses on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - specifically the screening or coupling attenuation of metallic communication cables using the absorbing clamp method. Applicable across a frequency range of 30 MHz to 1,000 MHz, and extended to 2.4 GHz in this second edition, the standard serves as a vital alternative to the triaxial method described in IEC 62153-4-4 and IEC 62153-4-9.
This updated version represents a significant technical revision that reorganizes clauses and annexes, extends frequency coverage, and introduces advanced test procedures involving virtual baluns and balunless methods with multiport Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs).
Key Topics
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Testing: IEC 62153-4-5 details precise procedures to measure how well metallic communication cables can screen electromagnetic interference or reduce coupling between conductors.
- Absorbing Clamp Method: This method uses an absorbing clamp to determine the attenuation of electromagnetic interference on cables without a defined outer circuit. Because of this, test results may vary by ±6 dB across different laboratories.
- Frequency Range: The standard covers a frequency range from 30 MHz up to 2.4 GHz, accommodating modern high-frequency cable applications.
- Balun and Balunless Test Procedures: The inclusion of virtual balun and balunless techniques enhances flexibility by enabling accurate screening and coupling attenuation measurements on balanced cables using multiport VNAs.
- Test Equipment and Setup: Detailed descriptions are provided for essential equipment such as baluns, test samples, and connecting units. The standard specifies calibration procedures essential for ensuring accuracy and repeatability.
- Measurement and Reporting: Clear guidelines address measuring near-end and far-end shielding effectiveness and coupling attenuation, while ensuring consistent, comprehensive test reports.
Applications
IEC 62153-4-5:2021 is essential for:
- Cable Manufacturers: Ensuring communication cables meet EMC requirements, qualifying products for international markets.
- Quality Assurance Laboratories: Providing standardized testing methods to verify cable performance and compliance.
- Telecommunication Industry: Testing cables used for data transmission to minimize interference and improve signal integrity.
- Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineers: Evaluating and mitigating EMC issues in metallic cable installations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supporting adherence to national and international EMC regulations involving metallic communication cables.
Related Standards
- IEC 62153-4-4: Defines triaxial methods for measuring cable screening attenuation.
- IEC 62153-4-9: Provides additional triaxial test methods for EMC on metallic cables.
- IEC 61156 Series: Focuses on generic cables for digital communications, including testing parameters.
- IEC 61000 Series: Addresses general EMC requirements and testing for electrical and electronic equipment.
- ISO/IEC 11801: Covers generic cabling for customer premises with EMC performance considerations.
Practical Value
Adopting IEC 62153-4-5:2021 ensures reliable and repeatable testing of metallic communication cables for EMC performance, critical to maintaining signal quality and minimizing interference in modern communication systems. Its absorbing clamp method offers an efficient alternative testing approach, especially useful where triaxial methods are less feasible. The standard’s expansion to 2.4 GHz addresses contemporary high-speed network demands, making it a comprehensive resource for manufacturers, testing facilities, and engineers focused on cable performance and EMC compliance.
