Specifies the method for the determination of the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of digital X-ray imaging devices as a function of air kerma and of spatial frequency for the working conditions in the range of the medical application as specified by the manufacturer. The intended users of this part of IEC 62220 are manufacturers and well equipped test laboratories. This Part 1-2 is restricted to digital X-ray imaging devices that are used for mammographic imaging such as but not exclusively, CR systems, direct and indirect flat panel detector based systems, scanning systems (CCD based or photon-counting). This part of IEC 62220 is not applicable to - digital X-ray imaging devices intended to be used in general radiography or in dental radiography; - computed tomography; and - devices for dynamic imaging (where series of images are acquired, as in fluoroscopic or cardiac imaging).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62220-1-2:2007 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to specify the method for determining the Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE) of digital X-ray imaging devices, specifically detectors used in mammography. The standard establishes a consistent, comparable procedure to measure DQE as a function of air kerma and spatial frequency, reflecting real-world working conditions as defined by the device manufacturer. DQE is a critical parameter for evaluating the imaging performance and dose efficiency of digital X-ray detectors in mammography, helping manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies ensure consistent quality and safety across devices.
This part of IEC 62220-1-2 is limited to digital X-ray detectors used for mammographic imaging, such as computed radiography (CR) systems, direct and indirect flat panel detectors, and various scanning systems (including CCD-based and photon-counting technologies). It does not apply to devices used in general radiography, dental radiography, computed tomography, or dynamic imaging applications like fluoroscopy.
Key Topics
- Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE): Defines DQE as the most relevant parameter for characterizing the imaging quality and dose efficiency of digital mammography systems.
- Measurement Conditions: Standardizes the test set-up, including radiation quality, geometry, air kerma levels, and use of specific test devices for reproducible results.
- Device Scope: Restricts applicability to digital X-ray detectors explicitly designed for mammography, specifying acceptable system types.
- Methodology: Details guidelines for measuring DQE in terms of spatial frequency and air kerma, referencing the importance of relevant exposure scenarios.
- Consistent Reporting: Requires explicit reporting of test conditions, including operating environment, equipment specifications, and calibration procedures to ensure result comparability.
- Quality Assurance: Addresses noise characterizations (Noise Power Spectrum), modulation transfer function, and avoidance of lag effects that could affect test outcomes.
- Exclusions: Clarifies what types of devices and imaging modalities are outside the scope of this standard to prevent misapplication.
Applications
IEC 62220-1-2 is essential for:
- Manufacturers of Digital Mammography Equipment: Ensuring that new and existing digital X-ray detectors meet internationally recognized performance benchmarks, facilitating market access and regulatory approval.
- Test Laboratories: Supporting the standardized and repeatable assessment of detector performance during type tests, quality assurance, or comparative studies of digital mammography systems.
- Regulatory Agencies: Providing a uniform basis for compliance and performance verification, which aids in device approval and continued oversight of imaging equipment safety and efficacy.
- Healthcare Providers: Indirectly benefits clinicians and patients by supporting the procurement and use of digital mammography systems assessed with consistent criteria for image quality and radiation dose efficiency.
By adhering to IEC 62220-1-2, stakeholders ensure fair performance comparisons across manufacturers and models, underpinning safe, high-quality medical imaging in mammography.

Conclusion
IEC 62220-1-2:2007 provides a rigorous, internationally accepted framework for evaluating the detective quantum efficiency of digital mammography detectors. This standard enhances quality assurance, safety, and the comparability of imaging systems, supporting innovation and reliability in the field of digital breast imaging. For manufacturers, laboratories, and regulators, following this standard ensures that devices are objectively assessed and meet the demanding requirements of modern mammographic practice.
