IEC 62236-4:2018 specifies limits for emission and immunity and provides performance criteria for signalling and telecommunications (S&T) apparatus (including power supply systems belonging to S&T) which may interfere with other apparatus inside the railway environment, or increase the total emissions for the railway environment and so risk causing electromagnetic interference to apparatus outside the railway system. This new edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: clarification of certain parts of the standard; extension of emission and immunity requirements.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62236-4:2018 - Railway applications - Electromagnetic compatibility - Part 4: Emission and immunity of the signalling and telecommunications apparatus - defines EMC requirements for signalling and telecommunications (S&T) apparatus installed inside the railway environment. This product standard sets emission limits and immunity performance criteria to prevent S&T equipment (including associated power-supply systems) from causing or suffering electromagnetic interference (EMI) within rail infrastructure and beyond. The 2018 (3rd) edition clarifies scope and definitions and extends the emission and immunity frequency ranges (notably emissions up to 1–6 GHz and immunity extended to 5.1–6 GHz).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of application
- Applies to S&T apparatus fixed within the railway environment (vehicle equipment, substations are covered by other parts: IEC 62236-3-2 and IEC 62236-5).
- Specific attention to vital equipment, apparatus inside the 3 m zone, ports within the 10 m zone with connections into the 3 m zone, and ports with cable length > 30 m.
- Emission limits
- Limits are specified per port category (AC/DC power ports, I/O, enclosure, earth, etc.). Where IEC 61000-6-4 emission levels are met, compliance with this standard is generally achieved provided DC power port emissions also comply.
- Immunity requirements
- Performance criteria and port-by-port immunity tests are defined (radiated and conducted RF, ESD, EFT/burst, surge, magnetic field tests, etc.).
- Test methods reference IEC 61000-4-x series (e.g., 4-2, 4-3, 4-4, 4-5, 4-6, 4-8) and CISPR measurement standards.
- Frequency coverage
- The standard considers DC to 400 GHz but specifies tests only where requirements are given. Emission and immunity extensions in the GHz bands are a notable update.
- Exclusions & notes
- Intentional radio transmitters (e.g., transponders) are not subject to the standard’s radiated limits at their communication frequencies. Safety and fault conditions are outside the scope.
Practical applications - who uses it
- Railway signalling and telecom equipment manufacturers - design and verify EMC compliance during product development.
- System integrators and railway operators - ensure interoperability and robust operation of interlocking, C&C, and communication systems.
- EMC test laboratories and certification bodies - perform port-specific emission and immunity testing against IEC 62236-4:2018 criteria.
- Regulators and procurement teams - reference standard when specifying acceptance criteria for S&T apparatus.
