IEC 62271-105:2012 applies to three-pole units for public and industrial distribution systems which are functional assemblies of switches including switch-disconnectors and current-limiting fuses designed so as to be capable of - breaking, at the rated recovery voltage, any current up to and including the rated short-circuit breaking current; - making, at the rated voltage, circuits to which the rated short-circuit breaking current applies. It does not apply to fuse-circuit-breakers, fuse-contactors, combinations for motor-circuits or to combinations incorporating single capacitor bank switches. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 62271-105, published in 2002, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - implementation of figures at the place where they are cited first; - renumbering of tables; - addition of some of the proposals from IEC paper 17A/852/INF; - addition of missing subclauses of IEC 62271-1; - implementation of 6.105 "Extension of validity of type tests" and consequently removing of the relevant parts in the different existing clauses; - change of 7th paragraph of 6.101.4 as there is now a definition of NSDD given in 3.7.4 of IEC 62271-1:2007. Harmonization with IEC 62271-107; - some referenced clauses in other standards like IEC 60282-1 were changed and therefore changed the editions under 1.2 to the ones referred to; - addition of a new Annex C defining tolerances. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 62271-1:2007.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62271-105:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for high-voltage alternating current switch-fuse combinations for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to 52 kV. This standard applies primarily to three-pole assemblies used in public and industrial electrical distribution systems. It covers functional assemblies combining switches, switch-disconnectors, and current-limiting fuses that enable safe breaking and making of electrical circuits at rated voltages and short-circuit currents.
This edition, published in 2012, replaces the earlier 2002 edition and includes technical revisions such as harmonization with related standards, enhancements to type test procedures, and added guidance on tolerances and test validity extensions. It should be used in conjunction with IEC 62271-1:2007, which provides general rules for high-voltage switchgear and controlgear.
Key Topics
-
Scope & Application
The standard applies to switch-fuse combinations designed to break currents up to the rated short-circuit breaking current and make circuits at rated voltages. It excludes fuse-circuit-breakers, fuse-contactors, motor-circuit combinations, and units incorporating single capacitor bank switches. -
Design & Construction Requirements
This includes criteria for equipment materials such as insulating gases and liquids, earthing and safety circuits, auxiliary control devices, operation mechanisms, position indicators, degrees of enclosure protection, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). -
Ratings & Performance
Key rating parameters include rated voltage, insulation level, normal current, temperature rise, short-time withstand current, peak withstand current, rated short-circuit breaking current, transfer and take-over currents, and transient recovery voltage characteristics. -
Type & Routine Tests
The standard prescribes detailed type testing procedures to verify dielectric performance, temperature rise, mechanical operation, making and breaking capabilities, electromagnetic compatibility, and tightness. It also details validations for fuse performance, long pre-arcing time conditions, and limits on test tolerances and validity durations. -
Selection & Coordination Guidance
IEC 62271-105 includes practical guidance for choosing appropriate switch-fuse combinations to ensure reliable operation and coordination in electrical distribution, particularly for transformer protection and varying service conditions.
Applications
-
Public and Industrial Power Distribution
The switch-fuse combinations defined by this standard are widely used in medium-voltage distribution networks for safely interrupting fault currents and isolating circuits. -
Transformer Protection
The standard provides coordination recommendations between fuses and switches to enhance transformer fault protection, ensuring fast and reliable breaking of short circuits. -
Electrical Switchgear Design
Manufacturers use IEC 62271-105 to design and certify switchgear assemblies meeting international safety, performance, and interoperability requirements. -
Power System Reliability & Safety
By adhering to this standard, utilities and industries mitigate electrical hazards, improve grid stability, and ensure compliance with global regulations governing high-voltage equipment.
