IEC 62271-211:2014 is applicable to single and three phase direct connections between gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (GIS) for rated voltages above 52 kV and transformer arrangements to establish electrical and mechanical interchange ability and to determine the limits of supply of for the transformer connection. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC TR 61639:1996 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) transfer from technical report to international standard; b) the minimum voltage rating was changed from 72,5 kV to above 52 kV; c) update of normative references; d) definition of insulated junction including limit of supply; e) definition of dielectric test of gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear for transformer connection in a three phase enclosure; f) addition of interface tolerances at transformer side; g) addition of transformer tolerances in service; h) addition of exceptional loads for bushings and flanges; i) consideration of oil- and gas-insulated transformers; j) inclusion of three-phase enclosed direct connections. The contents of the corrigendum 1 of August 2015 and corrigendum 2 of August 2017 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62271-211:2014 is an International Standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for direct connections between power transformers and gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (GIS) operating at rated voltages above 52 kV. This standard plays a crucial role in establishing electrical and mechanical interchangeability while defining limits of supply for transformer connections. It supersedes the earlier technical report IEC TR 61639:1996 and marks a transition from a technical report to a full international standard, reflecting significant technical updates and harmonization with modern high-voltage electrical equipment practices.
This standard addresses both single-phase and three-phase direct connections, accommodating both oil-filled and gas-insulated transformers, and sets out critical parameters such as dielectric testing, mechanical load considerations, and tolerance levels for connections.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Covers single and three phase direct connections between transformers and GIS for voltages above 52 kV.
- Voltage Rating Adjustment: The minimum voltage rating has been lowered from 72.5 kV to above 52 kV to broaden applicability.
- Mechanical and Electrical Interface Requirements:
- Definition of insulated junctions and limits of supply.
- Interface tolerances at the transformer side including tolerance in service.
- Mechanical forces and exceptional loads on bushings and flanges.
- Consideration of vibrations and displacements influencing connection integrity.
- Dielectric and Pressure Testing:
- Specifies dielectric tests for transformer connections in both single-phase and three-phase enclosures.
- Gas and vacuum tightness requirements to ensure insulation reliability and operational safety.
- Design Parameters:
- Rated insulation levels, continuous current capacities, short-time withstand currents, and peak withstand currents.
- Rated filling pressure of insulating gases.
- Standard Dimensions and Tolerances: Standardizes connection dimensions to ensure interoperability.
- Transformer Connection Types: Applicable to connections between oil-filled transformers and GIS as well as gas-insulated transformers and GIS.
- Documentation and Communication: Defines information requirements for enquiries, tenders, and orders to promote consistency and clarity in procurement and engineering processes.
Applications
IEC 62271-211:2014 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and engineers engaged in the development and installation of high-voltage switchgear systems. Typical applications include:
- Utility substations where power transformers are directly connected to gas-insulated switchgear.
- Industrial power distribution networks requiring compact, reliable, and safe transformer-switchgear assemblies.
- High-voltage installations in urban or space-restricted environments where GIS offers size and maintenance advantages.
- Projects demanding standardized, tested connections to ensure compatibility between equipment from different suppliers.
- Maintenance and operational protocols ensuring high reliability and safety of transformer-switchgear interfaces.
By following IEC 62271-211, users ensure compliance with international best practices, improved equipment lifespan, reduced failure risks, and simplified maintenance actions.
Related Standards
IEC 62271-211 forms part of the broader IEC 62271 series, which covers various aspects of high-voltage switchgear and controlgear. Related standards include:
